Leaf Rumours

Carter is NOT overrated, just having an off year, like the rest of the team.

A 35 G 70+ pt player and a projected 20 G 60+ pt player is a good return.

Carter, Giroux, Enstrom, Little, Kane, Bogosian, Pavelec = good core.

Kovalchuk, Enstrom, Little, Kane, bogosian, Pavelec = way better though.

They should just give him the money. They'll have to pay Carter $7 mill anyway.

Kovalchuk isn't worth the money he's asking....if those are his contract demands, I don't want him.

It's one thing entirely if this was a 26 yr old 50 goal scorer who consistently dragged his team kicking and screaming into the playoffs every year and was a playoff beast to top it off.....but he's a guy who's golfing so early most seasons that his choices of destinations are limited due to snow.

Maybe that's just what he's asking from Atlanta because he really doesn't want to be there....

Kovy + a loss of 11 mill in cap space for the next 10 years possibly.

Not something to scoff at.

And Carter will not get 7 mil. He will get one similar to what Kessel is getting now.

Carter's already getting 5 mill now. He won't re-sign for viturally the same amount of money.

He's going to get 7 mill minimum.

He's already making 5 million this year and next, I suspect he'll get more than a 500K raise. Although he will still be an RFA when his contracts done.

Carter already signed his RFA Kessel-deal. $5 mil with no UFA years taken away, coming off a season where he was older and less productive than Kessel was when he signed. As UFA with a 46 goal season under his belt, he'll be looking at $7+.

The Kessel deal will be pointed to as a precedent for Carter who is older and has accomplished as much or lesser than Kessel in terms of production.

I dont suspect that Carter's agent will ask for more money, but I doubt that they get it - I say he maxes out at 6.

you have it backwards.

the Carter RFA-off-rookie-contract deal was used as a precedent for the Kessel RFA-off-rookie-contract deal.

Of course, Kessel was a higher pick, more productive, and younger, and we not only got him for a similar caphit but got him locked in for 2 extra years.

I dont suspect he will get more than 6 from anyone. I mean Mike Richards makes 5.75, Getzlaf makes 5.325, Perry makes 5.325, Bergeron makes 4.75. He will not get paid more than these guys, who all are better players IMO, whomever his agent is.

those are all RFA-off-rookie-contract deals, the same deal that Carter is on now.

all signed well before those players came anywhere near being PPG players.

Those aren't his comparables for his next contract.

Carter chose to sign for a bit less than those guys, but made sure it was short term (3 years) specifically so that he could up it.

Right now Getzlaf and Perry are steals - if their contracts were up, they'd be getting $7+ as well.
