Leaf Rumours

Burke's trades make me nervous. He's already shown a penchant for trading players he doesn't like for less than they're worth (Kubina, Tlusty, Stralman) or just letting them go for nothing (Antropov). If he doesn't like Poni, Hagman, or even Stajan, then don't expect to get too much back for them. If he does like them, I think they stick around and it's adios to Stempy and Blake, who both have upped their value recently.

Truth be told, there probably has never been a better time to trade those two guys than right now, and maybe Burke is smart enough to capitalize on it well before the deadline.

simmonds is already a solid contributor for them. no reason to swap him for hagman, the pot would have to be sweetened (if they were even willing to deal simmonds at all).

Simmonds for Hagman + makes no sense for L.A........they won't be looking to deal anyone from their top 6 (outside of maybe Frolov) if they're interested in competiting.


If they want to add a Hagman-esque player, they'll be dealing picks or prospects for him, not a significant contributer like Simmonds.

He got Kenny Ryan (50th overall 2009) for Antropov, and 2nd rounder for Stralman and a recent 1st rounder for Tlusty.
 
He also got a 2nd rounder for Dominic Moore, and made the Kubina trade to free up space in getting Komisarek.

I see no problem with any of his trades thus far.

i didn't realize that simmonds was producing as well as hagman.

i thought he was closer to last year's production -- not realizing that he had practically matched his totals from last year through the half season.

if he was a 3rd liner then hagman and a second for a young 3rd liner (assuming teams are enamoured with hagman's hot start, and i think plenty would be), it's a trade a team looking to contend for the playoffs makes.

but yeah, simmonds is a good 45-50 point guy for them already, so agreed, hagman and a pick wouldn't make sense for them.
 
Antropov is a PPG player. He didn't even get a 1st for him. That being the case, he should've resigned him at the deadline, since he was pretty much our best forward at the time. Antropov for 4 yrs >>>> Ryan.

He got a 2nd for Stralman, but big whoop. Stralman is a 23 year old second pairing guy with the Jackets right now, with 18 points and 4 PPG. Keep in mind that Beauch only has 19 points. Stralman >>> 2nd.

Kubina is a guy I always hated, but even I recognized his value. Sure, the motivation to open up the money for Komi is valid, but that doesn't mean you just toss the guy away for nothing. Right now Kubina is basically their anchor on D, with 21 points and a PLUS 15 (unheard of for that guy). And all we got was Exelby and Stuart? One would think that just the name alone should have been able to attract more.

Tlusty for Paradis? I suppose it's not looking like much now, with Tlusty still in the minors for the Canes too, but it just seems like low value to get a late first rounder for a PPG AHLer who was a high first rounder just a few years ago.

So, overall, I don't know, unlike with Quinn, who I thought was a fantastic trader, Burke makes me anxious because he seems to value certain things more than others and discounts certain qualities too much.

yeah but there are three centres listed there.

too lazy to check the ice time but if he's 4th amongst wingers then he's in their top 6...
 
Justin Williams is out for the next 3 months.........kinda tough for him to be ahead of Simmonds on the depth chart.
 
5th among wingers.

Smyth/Frolov/Brown/Williams are their top-4 wingers.

and, of course, if Smyth/Williams hadn't missed all those games to injury, Simmonds average icetime would be even lower.
 
....and of course with Williams out for the next three months, Simmonds clearly takes his place on the wing, as a top 6 winger.

The Williams injury is exactly why the rumours of LA looking to trade for a top-6 winger are making the rounds right now.
 
Hey, pardon me for being even keel and not forever second guessing our Cup winning GM.

Burke's "values" have iced a much more intense, inspired team this season - I don't see how you can't see that.

..and if you believe that Antropov is a ppg player (like Wellwood) then I guess you'll be betting on a Thrashers Cup appearance.
