Leaf Rumours

Double Dion sucks. You'd be cursing that trade (Kaberle) for a very long time.

Who ever said anything about trading Kabs for him??

Hypothetical question here:

As Dion Phaneuf rumors start to surface, and with the Leafs in questionable (at best) playoff contention right now, would you consider making a move for the young defenceman if it meant involving Kaberle going the other way?

.

I like Phaneuf a lot. I think he probably will be moved, but it won't be until this summer at the earliest. Calgary does have real cap issues, and he's becoming expendable for them. If they go out again in the first round, changes will be made.

I wouldn't be so sure of that....Calgary is in serious need of another impact forward. With Giordano outplaying Phaneuf this year, and Cory Sarich a decent enough #4 there is a lot of talk of moving Phaneuf and going with a top 4 of:

Bouwmeester-Regehr
Giordano-Sarich

Phaneuf's reputation around the league and his potential is enough for there to be some serious interest in him, but Calgary would have to take back a pretty hefty deal the other way. Some potential names I could see come up in a Phaneuf discussion?

Lecavalier, Horton, Morrow, Brassard, J Staal, Spezza

So, if we could make something like the following happen:

TOR: Phaneuf, Backlund, and a pick

CGY: Kaberle and Blake

you wouldn't sit down and see where this puts us three-five years from now?

Phaneuf is worth a gamble for some team to take, he has played at an elite level and he's still young. He's somewhat expendable for the Flames since they signed Bouwmeester. Not sure I'd want to give up Kabs for him though. Most any other offer we could come up with will be trumped by another team, guaranteed.

Phaneuf has never played at an elite level. He has played at close to an elite level offensively...but he's always been terrible defensively. He throws big hits once in a while and people forget about his overall poor defensive work.

He has played at an elite level before. It's not like this guy came out of nowhere for one good year. He's known as a huge, physical defenceman, but he's also very skilled offensively and on the power play as well.

4 NHL Seasons:

82 20-29-49
79 17-33-50
82 17-43-60
80 11-36-47

Those aren't elite numbers for a young defenceman?

Plus, he's still only 24 years old.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dion_Phaneuf

"made his NHL debut in 2005 after a four year junior career with the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League in which he was twice named the Defenceman of the Year. He set a Flames record for most goals by a first-year defenceman and was named a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy as top rookie in 2005–06. Two years later, he was a finalist for the James Norris Memorial Trophy as top defenceman, though he did not win either award. Phaneuf is a two-time NHL All-Star. He has represented Canada internationally three times in his career, winning silver and gold medals at the World Junior Hockey Championship in 2004 and 2005 respectively, and a gold medal at the 2007 Men's World Ice Hockey Championships."

Phaneuf is wicked overrated, but if they are selling him, I'm definitely interested.

Not for Kaberle though.

I'm well aware of what he's "known" as in the general hockey world. What he's known as in Calgary though, is an extremely mistake and mental lapse prone defenceman.

He's a nice PP weapon with that shot, and has solid all around puck skills..but he isn't an elite defender.

You wouldn't want him as our #1 defender, I can guarantee that. He's what Bryan McCabe's reputation was, but because he plays in a small media market, he has a different reputation around the league.

Last year shed some doubt on his game, no doubt, and it's continued this year. If he can rebound a little bit though, he can play at an elite level. And I'd be willing to bet on that happening, since he's still only 24. McCabe is a good comparison, but if Phaneuf can get his game back to where it was, McCabe is a poor man's Phaneuf.

By the way, Bryan McCabe's point totals in his first 6 NHL seasons?

23, 28, 24, 21, 25, 29

I found the Mccabe criticism comical.

Dion would become the most overrated, overrated, worse giveaway machine in the NHL if he joined the Leafs.

McCabe and Tucker told the pedophuks to take a hike, what is not to like about the guy. Country atmosphere my arse.

I have been on double dion for years!!!!

He is NOT good. He is bad.

This is not a recent trend in his play...this is people finally looking at him and realizing he is not good.

and ya...like I said earlier...double dion at his BEST is like McCabe....sadly dion rarely is that good.

Flames play the late game tonight...watch him.
