Do you guys think theres any chance the Leafs would be able to pry Mikko Koivu away from the Wild? He'd be the perfect compliment to Kessel.

He's 6'2 200lbs, a great 2 way playmaking centre, is only 26 years old, is the captain of the Wild right now and is signed to a very good contract at $3.25 a year for the next couple years. Not to mention he's over a PPG for the Wild this year. I don't know what it would take to get him but it would be a great pick-up if it happened.
 
Pat Burns said today he thinks Vinny is gone before the end of the season.

The Leafs make a lot of sense for Lecavalier in a way. He's exactly what they need, Burke clearly wants to compete now, and Toronto can afford the contract. Montreal has taken themselves out of the equation with the Gomez deal, I think.

Is it wise to take on that kind of contract? Maybe not, but Burke is clearly looking to compete now and there is a reasonable chance we'll get some good years out of Vinny.
 
also just read that Bryan Murray was at the ACC last night doing some scouting.

Take with a large grain of salt, but hockeyleaks says that they have interest in hagman.
 
Getting Vinny would be a ballsy move, but I think it would pay off in the long run.

Considering his contract and the fact that he's slumping, the asking price should be pretty reasonable for a player of his calibre.

As for the length of his contract... by the year 2020, $7.7 just won't be what it used to be. We've seen how much salaries have increased in just 4 post-lockout years, and I don't see any reason not to expect that to continue.

The big question, of course is is this guy slumping, or is he a 70 point player now? Has there ever been a player to go from 40-50 goal, 90-100 point player at age 26-27, to a 70 point player for no real reason the next year and stay there for the rest of his career? Was there a major injury or something that happened around that time that I'm not aware of? He sure looked like an elite player to me when we played Tampa a few weeks ago.​

He had a major surgery after that season, no?
 
OK, apparently he had shoulder surgery after his most recent "great" season in 07-08.

I'm no physiotherapist and I haven't played sports at a high level, but I wouldn't have thought that shoulder problems could hobble a player so much. Knee, back, ankle? Sure.
 
If you shoulder/s go it throws your whole upper body out of whack.

Shooting, stick handling and checking is all effected.
 
Lecavalier isnt' a 50 goal 100 point player. He is a 50 goal 100 point talent, but for some reason, through the course of his whole career, he's never been able to maintain that level of play consistently.

That said he's at worst a big, skille center who will score 30 and put up ~ppg, who can take over a game at any moment, and has the talent to put up 50 and 100 in any given year.

Maybe playing in a market like Toronto where you will be publicly lambasted for half-assing it will light a fire under him. There just isn't as much incentive to operate at 100% in T. Bay.

Then again, do you want to commit $7.7 for 11 years + whatever we cough up in a trade to a guy who has severe motivation issues?
 
I don't know if its motivational issues, but would I want a cup winning, ppg, big legit #1 center, who has elite #1 center talent? Hell yeah.

And if I can dump a big contract in the process? You bet your balls I'd do it.

Way before Briere and Marleau.

I think I'm with you leafmon. But let's bet your balls instead.

I think the elite skill is still there, which is by far the most important thing. Motivation issues can be taken care of. He doesn't strike me as an incorrigible headcase or anything.
