Leaf Rumours

I'm I believer in the theory that both teams need to hurt a little bit in order for a trade to be fair./QUOTE]

In 'regular' trades.....I agree completely. In 'rental' deals, that's rarely the case.

In fact I doubt many GM's ever deal a player of even Schenn's calibre in such deals.

You also have to guage the risk.

Odds are the team that trades for Kovalchuk won't be able to resign him. And odds are the team that does get him, isn't giving up a player like Kadri.

Don't fight against yourself.

It wouldn't be a rental though if the Leafs signed him a day or two later.

Or if Atlanta gives the Leafs a window to work out an extension with him before a trade is made.

To be honest, Schenn might be enough of a centerpiece to entice Waddel. Don't think another team will be giving up recent top 5 picks.

Unless Philly unloads Carter, but in that case Kadri won't make a difference anyway.

It would be silly to trade Schenn right now - his value is at its lowest point ever (unless you think it could slip further).

Just to clarify......are you saying it would be 'silly' to trade Schenn in a deal for Kovalchuk, because we'd be selling 'low'?

Heh.

The Kings have some interesting peices as well that could entice Atlanta (Schenn, Dustin Brown, Frolov etc). But if I were Kings I'd worry first about getting a goalie. Because with or without Kolvachuk, they aren't going anywhere in the playoffs with Quick or Ersberg.

Heh.

Just to clarify ... are you saying that the way players actually play at the NHL level has no bearing on the trade value that GMs assign to them?

I don't think Burke will part with Kadri unless it's for Malkin or something. The guy not only has talent, he has the right attitude for the city and enough grit for a Burke team.

I don't even think he would trade him for Kovalchuk, considering his free-agent status. A Luke Schenn by himself, if he's still considered a top-5 type talent, is more than I think most other teams would give up for a rent a player. Hopefully, if this situation comes up, Burke can convince Waddell (and Burke is very convincing) that Schenn has top d-man potential.

Anyway, considering Atlanta is in the playoff race, and will almost definitely be in the playoff race come trade deadline, I really don't see them trading Kovalchuk.

As you had no actual rebutal, I'll have to Iassume that was what you actual meant...brilliant.

No, what I believe.....Is that NHL GM's put far more weight into what a 19 year old does over an 82 game schedule, than they do a 30 game stretch as a 20 year old.

I think what Montana is saying is that dealing Schenn in a trade for Kovalchuk would be selling high.

Precisely.

Also good call on the Kings.....with their surplus of young talent and decent cap situation, they could be strong suitors for Kovy.

In fact a Kovy + Lehtonen package would suit them perfectly.

IKovalchuk and KLehtonen for BSchenn and DBrown

The Kings would be a dynamic team if a trade like that went down. Kopitar/Kovalchuk upfront, Doughty on the blueline, Lehtonen in goal.

I'd guess that his value is still quite high.

But the longer this goes on, the more it drops.

To answer your question, Montana ... no, your assumption was erroneous. The point is that Schenn's value is indeed low and that he will not be enough to land a Kovalchuk no matter how many spare parts you want to throw in.

Best of luck with that one, Einstein.

Quick's a much better goaltender than people are giving credit to. He's had a few rought outings lately that have knocked his save percentage down a bit (it's at .904 right now), but he posted a .914 mark in substantial time last season and has a career .917 mark in the AHL. He might not be an ideal option in goal but he's competent enough to be at least average on most nights.

I don't see why his value would be low. You are talking about a guy who just last year was a shut down defensemen.

He is young. In his second year. GM's aren't that reactionary. Colin Wilson and Cody Hodgson's values aren't low.

Schenn is not as bad as Toskala yet, but the way things are going, I would NOT be surprised to see him right out of the NHL in two years. He is just NOT good in any way. Not one redeeming quality that I have seen.

Jeez imagine my surprise to see that on top of having no shot, no skating, no temper like Kadri, he has the lower legs of a parakeet. Fletcher should be thrown off a balcony for that pick.

Schenn, might get a second this year, a fourth next year. He is that terrible.
