Leaf Rumours

The hockey world would be calling Bernier a bust if he played for the Leafs for 5 years and never established himself as a starter.

I'd say a more fair assessment would be that both Reimer and Bernier are on short leashes, both still need play at a high level for the team to succeed. There isn't a better player to deal with a goalie tandem situation than Reimer - he'll just shrug his shoulders and smile.

The Bernier trade was totally made because they didn't believe Scrivens could handle the load if Reimer got hurt again.

Reimer was the Leafs best player (or at least the most impactful) player last year. If the Leafs believed they needed to fix a strength, they aren't very smart.

They might hope Bernier becomes the number one, but IMO he was brought in because, although they now have two good goalies, neither have proven themselves to be able to carry the load.

If they were so worried about Reimer they would have gone with a sure thing like Luongo. to me an acquisition like Bernier means they do believe in Reimer.

Exactly.

They just like Benier/Reimer better than Reimer/Scrivens.

A lot of teams, for whatever reason, like to declare their starter before any games are played. The Leafs haven't done that. They've said, at least Randy has, that the best guy will play.

If Bernier was brought in to be the clear cut starter, like Toskala was, like Raycroft was, they would've made that clear.

Bernier might play 60 games, he might play 20. But it will depend on performance.

If they brought in a highly paid, established goalie, that would be a different story, like Leafman mentioned. It would have likely meant a clear demotion for Reimer. But they brought in a goalie with less experience than Reimer.

They think Reimer/Bernier is a better duo than Reimer/Scrivens. They better be right, because it's a lot more costly.

I have no doubt that leafs' brass likes bernier better than reimer. Hell, they tried to get MIKKA KIPRUSOFF last year, for chrissakes.

but the last leafs' brass all liked gustavsson, toskala, and giguere better than Reimer too, and they were wrong, too.

unfortunately, even though I think reimer will likely prove to be the better goalie again, this time we've put ourselves into a corner, and it looks to me like it'll be pretty much impossible to retain Reimer next year no matter what happens.

too bad.

They traded for a goalie with draft pedigree, and a winning NHL record for a college free-agent, NHL backup goaltender with a losing NHL record.

I'd say that's a pretty healthy upgrade.

If Reimer plays great, they will likely have to trade Bernier in the offseason to afford Reimer's next deal. It wouldn't make sense to pay Reimer starters money and have a 3M back-up.

But ya, it's very unlikely they can keep both next season.

Hopefully they both play well enough that they can trade one them for something of value.

yes, if you base your assessment of players in their mid-20s on their draft position, then it looks good. especially if you ignore the other two assets given up in the deal, and the salary cap implications too.

They are paying for additional wins, is that not a good idea?

Reimer was drafted by the leafs and has done nothing but prove he's worthy for the job.

Can't we for once have some confidence in our own players.

In my opinion, there are very few goaltending tandems in the entire league where if the #1 goes down that the #2 will be able to handle the load and handle it easy. Not going to go through the teams but i'm fairly certain the number is low.

Why did we have to go out and get "insurance" and mess with our cap situation in the process, show little faith in Reimer, and now we are having a hell of a time signing two of our best players.

I don't think it was the right move. I hope Nonis proves me wrong in the long run, but right now it looks like its going to cost us even more then what we gave up.

It was undeniably an upgrade in goal. Only completely deluded leaf fans put any value on Scrivens.

The main question about it are:
-Is it a good use of 3.5M?
-Is giving up Frattin and the pick too much for someone who might not be an upgrade?
-Is having the 1a/1b going to hurt either goalie's development/future?

Leafs are paying less for 2 goalies than most teams pay for their starter, cap-wise I'm not sure of the complaints.

Scrivens' and Bernier's career numbers are almost identical.

It isn't a clear upgrade at all, that's the problem. But they are spending a lot more money on the position and they gave up a good, young, cheap winger.

They are a lot closer to the pack now. Budget has more than doubled. Bernier (with absorbed salaries in deal) + Reimer cost 5.2M.

They spent 2.4M last year, and got top notch goaltending.
