Leaf Rumours

Fraser/Liles would have to be traded for this to work for cap flexibility. Still can be done with relative ease, imo.

I am starting to think Nonis planned this whole "cap crunch" argument as an argument to bring to Cody/Naz in an effort to get them below market value on a contract (especially this year). Don't be surprised if Liles is quickly traded in training camp if Ranger and/or Rielly make a big impression.

If Nonis meets him down the middle at $2.5 million, then signs Raymond at $750,000, and demotes Smith and Holzer:

JVR ($4.250m) / Bozak ($4.200m) / Kessel ($5.400m)
Lupul ($5.250m) / Kadri ($2.900m) / Clarkson ($5.250m)
Raymond ($0.750m) / Bolland ($3.375m) / Kulemin ($2.800m)
McLaren ($0.700m) / McClement ($1.500m) / Orr ($0.925m)
Colborne ($0.600m) /

Gunnarsson ($3.150m) / Phaneuf ($6.500m)
Gardiner ($1.117m) / Franson ($2.500m)
Liles ($3.875m) / Ranger ($1.000m)
Fraser ($1.275m) /

Bernier ($2.900m)
Reimer ($1.800m)

Buyots + RST's ($2,500m)

SALARY CAP: $64,300,000
CAP PAYROLL: $64,516,667
BONUSES: $300,000

CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $83,333

Given how little he budged on Kadri over the summer ($25,000?), I wonder if he'll be willing to meet him in the middle. Maybe he's just gonna wait him out and hope he caves.

I think he could fit them all in easy this year, but I would guess that with all those contracts coming up next year, Nonis is trying to squeeze this years stragglers into two year contracts to get their next renegotiation out beyond the crunch.

Franson is a UFA in 2 years. It would be dumb to sign him to a 2 year deal.

Once next year hits, with a year left on his deal, Franson's just going to wait it out and test UFA and the Leafs will have to trade him for 10 cents on the dollar or let him walk for nothing.

Yeah, but they'd get a top 4 dman for $2 million for 2 years. Thats insane cap savings.

And either way you can resign him next summer. Most guys don't make it to July 1st. Either way his next contract is going to be his big UFA deal.

That of course is if you even want to resign him.

Fraser doesn't make much in the grand scheme of things and if you wanted to, you could probably trade him for a late round pick.

Guys like him are always overrated around the league.

I'm less bothered by the impact of the Fraser signing on other players.

Pisses me off, but not as much as the fact that ****ing Fraser is actually going to play for us. He's so bad.

I mean, do we need any more evidence than the team totally turning around and taking it to Boston as soon as he got injured??

Worst case, Fraser is waived and demoted - cap savings $925.

Really, anything around a $1mil is a nothing signing. It's a guaranteed contract, but effects on the cap are marginal.

Fraser isn't that bad of an option for the price he is paid. The fact that he can pummel opposing teams players makes him even more valuable.

I dont think he prevents Carlyle from playing the younger guys.

Im in full agreement with the coaching staff about playing the best available player at the particular point in time. It does not matter who "will be" better than Fraser in the future, its who is better at this point and will help us the most to win the game. If Reilly or whoever comes into camp and shows that he can be a regular, i dont think management and coaches will keep him down to play Mark Fraser.
