Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

Re: Leafs' Prospect Discussion Thread!

yeah i go with your 2nd paragraph there. those guys were kept down in part because the team was a disaster and they didn't care at all about wins.

but now with the future team firmly in place in both roster and system i don't think they'll consider anything other than icing the best team.

And especially with the addition of Hainsey allowing them to shelter the bottom pair completely, i don't think they'd be too worried about him getting overwhelmed and set back.

the biggest thing in his way, imo, is that there's a bunch of other rookies - dermott rosen borgman - who could simply straight up beat him out for a job at this point.

Re: Leafs' Prospect Discussion Thread!

To be honest, of the limited games i watched Liljegren at the WJHC exhibition games, I think dermott is definitely more NHL ready at this point.

I'll not be surprised at all if other prospects flat out beat out the 17 years old for the last NHL spots.

Re: Leafs' Prospect Discussion Thread!

Read this report here

Seems like Grunnstrom is going back to Europe instead of coming to the Marlies / Leafs this season, which is a surprise and a bit of disappointment.

I thought he'd be in good position to challenge for a spot on the roster this year, and eventually replace Uncle Leo.

Re: Leafs' Prospect Discussion Thread!

How does the Marlies roster look like?

I thought we'd have spots up front. The only additions are Adam Brooks and Jeremy Bracco, but we also lost Leipsic, Kapanen from last year's roster ... so I thought we could find a spot for Grundstrom?

Re: Leafs' Prospect Discussion Thread!

well yeah there's room on the marlies but not really on the leafs.

Marleau - Matthews - Nylander
VanRyk - Bozak - Marner
Komarov - Kadri - Brown
Martin - Moore - Hyman
(Soshnikov - Leivo)

Fehr - Smith - Kapanen
Rychel - Aaltonen - Johnsson
Lindberg - Gauthier - Greening
Timashov - Brooks - Bracco
(Moore - Dzierkals)

(Engvall? Grundstrom? Korshkov?)

Re: Leafs' Prospect Discussion Thread!

Will Kapanen be waiver exempt this year?
Yes.

He's waiver exempt either for two more seasons, or until he plays 137 more NHL games. Whichever comes first. The only one of our NHL-ready forward prospects that isn't exempt is Josh Leivo. Even Soshnikov is exempt until he plays another 3 NHL games.

Aha. Excellent.

In that case, I think all the people penciling him into our opening day lineup are a bit premature. Not that he isn't ready, but there are just too many bodies at this point.

Re: Leafs' Prospect Discussion Thread!

As for Grundstom, a few important details to remember:

The kid's only 19 years old. Anyone who thought he actually had any chance of cracking the Leaf roster this year was dreaming, IMO. As zeke's illustrated, the roster spots just aren't there---and maybe not even for older, clearly NHL-ready players like Leivo, Kapanen & Soshnikov.

Another important factor is Grundstrom's SHL club, Frolunda. This isn't like Nylander or Liljegren's situations, where sending them back to Sweden meant sticking them on clown-show teams in a life-and-death fight to avoid finishing in last place and being relegated. Frolunda's actually a good team, and they gave teenaged Grundstrom plenty of ice-time and opportunities last season.

This also might be a sop to the Swedish hockey federation. They're getting pretty prickly about NHL teams pulling young Swedish talent out of Sweden and sticking it into the AHL. The Leafs are likely about to do this with Liljegren, but sending Grundstrom back at the same time might smooth some ruffled feathers over there.

not much of a roster. But Liljegren and Dermott will be interesting to watch. Grundstrom, Bracco, Brooks ineresting too.

Re: Leafs' Prospect Discussion Thread!

BG, aren't there 3 tourney games?

Also, has the Leafs regular season TV schedule been released?

There are 3 games, but LeafsTV doesn't look like it plans to produce/air the Montreal vs. Ottawa game on Saturday night.

Re: Leafs' Prospect Discussion Thread!

I've been trying to offload a pair of tickets to the Habs/Sens game for free on Twitter and on the Habs board with no luck. Anyone interested?
