Really?...i blocked him....

and deciding between Chara and Redden is mocked now, at the time it wasn't so cut and dry.

i don't think anyone approved the Gomez end for Montreal at any given time in the history of ever.

To be fair, McDonagh wasn't progressing and looked like a borderline bust at one point as well. That Gomez contract was always horrendous though.

Yea that was a horrible contract, though to be fair Gomez was at one point a skilled player... then he just fell off the map and hasn't been seen since.

disagree but rumour was he didnt want to play for montreal

timmins was livid after the trade

He was a year removed from being drafted. A bit early to give up on a 1st round pick.

Two years actually.

He was a 2007 draft pick that was dealt in June of 2009.

And he had virtually the same season in his sophomore season that he did in his freshman year. He wasn't putting up the offensive totals in the NCAA you would expect of a high-pedigree first rounder.

So while it was clearly an asinine trade for the Habs ultimately, McDonagh had stagnated as a prospect at that point. It wasn't until he was in the NHL that he started improving offensively yet again. Whether he was really raw or not at the time is debatable, but from Montreal's standpoint I can certainly see reason for concern.

the idea that they had to give up anything of value for that gomez contract is hilarious.

they should have demanded the rangers throw in a top pick or prospect just to take on that horrific contract, not actually given up one.

just insanely bad, and no that's not hindsight.

My bad... screwed up the year of that trade. Thought it was in 08 for some reason.

I 100 percent agree, so you're preaching to the choir. I'm just saying that McDonagh wasn't this can't miss prospect.

The last time I checked, GM's don't "let" free agents do anything.

They had the option to resign him before he even hit the open market, they chose instead to use that money into giving Redden a new contract. One guy is well on his way to becoming a HOF'er, the other is selling crack at his local street corner....

Sure they do... could have traded him at the deadline, offered him a contract he "couldn't turn down". If memory serves correctly it was a decision between the two due to cap reasons? and the decision was made to keep Redden.

Your GM maybe didn't "let" him leave but he certainly made a choice to prioritize redden.
