Leafs sign Gio to 2 year deal 1.6 million deal

Most players have to look at us as a top 2-3 team in the league going into next year. So hopefully Dubas can do a good job of targeting discount guys that want to come here for a chance at a cup run (I really don’t see Florida winning the division next year to force another TB first round match up) whether hometown or not. Good job with Gio, spezza and the cunt in the past. See if he can find some more of those - extra win if he reminds Forsberg that Sweden is basically Toronto 😂

To move quickly on Gio likes this means they’ve already got their plan in place and are wasting no time. I think if Dubie had any self-imposed shackles on him from Shanny, the board, or even Keefe’s more distant influence, he’s shutting them out now and going full Dubie in his last contract year. If he’s going out, he’s going out on his own terms. I’m excited to see his plan unfold. Muzzin is for sure gone, and the question is who he’s spending that cash on. Maybe a splash coming up.

This is a zero risk move. Can waive him or trade him. Though Dubas is safe as he would have been fired by now - this move doesn’t speak to much

Playoffs TOI

Even Strength

Muzz 18:10 +4 --- Brodie 18:11 +5
Rielly 18:03 +0 --- Boosh 13:30 -1
Gio 15:02 +0 ------ Holl 14:28 +2 / Lilly 12:35 +2

Shorthanded

Muzz 3:49 --- Brodie 3:53
Gio 3:06 ------- Holl 2:23 / Lilly 4:25
Rielly 0:27 ---- Boosh 0:23

Why do you think moving muzz makes us better?

Argue that it's a future-oriented move trying to get value and get ahead of a projected muzzin decline that may or may not come next year.

Don't tell me that it makes their d better tho. Accept that it's a downgraded corps and if you feel the money is better spent up front, that's fine.

Why do you think moving muzz makes us better?
There’s several reasons.

We push the risk of more frequent and compounding injuries (concussions) to someone else.

We make room for two dmen who have killed every level they’ve ever played, including one that just had a dominant semi-season and cemented a spot.

We probably get some real nice assets in return, maybe even a future Muzz replacement.

We just got our current Muzz replacement locked up for $800k.

We reallocate his money to the forwards who have failed us every single playoffs when it mattered.

Aside from a nice 7 game showing, which didn’t even result in a series win, Muzz was terrible or injured all year, so why are we so afraid to take this “risk”?

I guess where you and I differ though is that Muzzin didn't make our blueline better this past season. Had we hypothetically replaced Muzzin last season with a reasonable Muzzin replacement, our blueline would have been better without him. You're treating next season as if we should absolutely expect differently, and I'm really not sure that you're right on that. In fact, I flat out doubt that you are.

Yes, losing 31 yr old Muzzin hurt our blueline a lot. We already lost him though. Losing 32 yr old Muzzin wouldn't hurt at all as long as he was adequately replaced. Which again, replacing 32 yr old Muzzin is easy. Really easy. Replacing 31 yr old Muzzin is much, much harder.

How is Gio a worse bet to beat 32 year old Muzz than next year’s Muzz?

I bet he does better and plays more.

Yeah, I don't think Gio is a worse bet there. My money would personally be on 39 yr old Gio being roughly equal to 33 yr old Muzz and probably more durable.

Well no, that's why I'm conflicted on trading him. If I knew for sure that he'd be playoff muzzin and make up an elite shutdown pairing that we haven't seen in Toronto for at least 20 years I'd say it's an easy decision. But I'm not sure. That's why it's tough. And whether you trade him or keep him and he suddenly sucks, you have the same issue; a downgraded dcorps from the playoffs and you lack an elite top shutdown pair.

Keeping him feels like the bolder, more aggressive option as Kyle bets on playoff Muzzin being for real and gives the Leafs and phenomenal top pair that, while may not replicate having a single Hedman, gives them something as close as they're gonna get for next season.

Even if he has a playoff Muzz season all year next year, the trade still makes sense. I’d rather use the money to get another 25-30 goal forward, gamble that blue chip Sandin acquits himself well and that Gio replaces Muzz without missing a beat, and get a sweet futures return for a guy who only has two years left with us.

Gonna assume, much like Spezza there is probably an unspoken 'trade me and i retire,' as well as a 'claim me and i retire' clause with Gio.

Maybe Gio is waved for some 4d chess cap gymnastics through the year, but that is probably about it.
