Leafs sign John Tavares to 7 year/ $77m deal

Meh, he also got suspended with his new team...not to mention he nixed the original trade.

I guess it depends on what you value. A guy who is boring and consistent, or a guy who is a bit mental but can put up fringe conn smythe level playoff runs when he dials in.

I think the last few years have given us the answer to that problem tbh.

this fucking guy
Dumbass mbow

But to be fair the nylander thing was willy or Mitch (both equally dumb but not a Willy thing).

And to be fair if you swapped one of those two with a guy like mcavoy… this team is better.

Again though Dubas was the only gm in the league that actually thought mccann was worth anything at the time. He's the one who traded for him.

That was a period of time where a smart organization turned itself into a stanley cup contender immediately on everyone else's throwaways.

I dunno how hard I'd push the "only gm in the league" argument given the specific context of it all. Never in history and never again will such industrial strength idiocy occur. The lengths a bunch of idiot front offices went to protect their junk and bad cap structures was fucking incredible.

If we didn't have a centre replacement for him, we wouldn't have traded him. Dubas felt Kerfoot could be a good 3C replacement for Kadri (lol). He would have been far less likely to believe Kerfoot was a 2C replacement.
So like I said, the existence of Tavares is the cause. Not his performance (which was good enough to justify trading Kadri), not the money (because they could afford both, and swapped Kadri for more money in Kerf/Barrie), but just him being alive.

Dubie blew it. He had a 1-2-3 punch of Matty, Tavares, and Kadri and thought he was getting another cheap Kadri (maybe even better) in Kerfoot. In fairness, we all thought that. We were all wrong. Further in his defense, nobody ever would've imagine Kadri putting up an 87 point season that year or even 75 points this year. He overperformed expectations just like Hyman and Verhaeghe.

And kept him for 5 minutes.

He thought he was being sneaky smart with that move. Like he'll dangle this McCann carrot so that all the idiots out there wouldn't touch Holl or Kerfoot. Meanwhile, he's dangling a carrot to protect shit.

That was one of the most obvious screw ups at the very instant it happened.

I agree with this and it's often forgotten. He's the only Gm to trade for him.

He traded for him not to keep him, but to basically use him as a decoy to keep other worse players over him.

How nice would McCann have been on this team these last few years when we dry up in the playoffs.

where did anyone blame our postseason woes entirely on JT?

he was just the original sin that started us down this very sinful path. his sin helped prompt more, future, sins.

Better read Wehaves posts. I'm sure it is in there somewhere.

Not exactly. He didn’t need to trade for McCann in order to protect Justin Holl.

I think he did it so he could protect Holl while still being reasonably confident Alex Kerfoot wouldn’t get claimed at the same time.

lol, exactly.

I've heard a few iterations of what he was doing and they're all ridiculous. McCann had scored at a 30 goal pace over his previous 82 games prior to getting claimed and has scored more goals over the last 3 years than any Leaf other than Matthews and Willy.
