Misc 2018 Playoff News Thread

I should probably hate this Capitals team as a Canes fan and also a Penguin fan, but I was begrudgingly rooting for them. Once they beat Pittsburgh, I didn't mind rooting for them mainly out of respect for Ovechkin. He is one of the greatest goal scorers in the history of the game and has never quit when some other players would have started mailing it in after the years of playoff disappointment. The Caps and Ovie deserved to win and I can't think of a bad thing to say about them. Well deserved Cup win and Ovie is one hell of a hockey player.

Now that the big shiny thing has been skated around its time for the Canes to get down to business. That is what I'm happiest about.

Happy for the Caps. They earned that one. Vegas had an amazing run. I don't think they'll replicate that for a while, hope they enjoyed it.

How many Caps players will go to the White House? My guess, only the Russians.

Can we please leave the political B.S. out of this forum?

What, when Smith-Pelly makes statements we cannot discuss? And just like the Eagles, you know it going to come up. And for the record, I for one don't think it's B.S. Far from it.

Amen! Now let's get down to the business of hand that concerns all of us around here! So who goes first...Skinner or Faulk or Hanafin? The Canes will pull off at least one blockbuster the week of the draft that includes at least one of those three mentioned. It's sounding more and more like the goaltending question may not be addressed until July 1st and beyond.

You're right, this is a Hockey Forum. And if a hockey team or players on a team decide to do something or say something we should be able to discuss it in this forum.

Since we desperately need scoring, I would take Skinner off the table (unless he absolutely wants out). I think Brindy would be able to have a chat with Jeff and discuss his role in the Top 6. Despite begin named to the "All-Star" team neither Faulk nor Hanifin are that skilled. Hanifin probably still has some upside, but will he ever be any where near a shut down type of defenseman? The Canes need to get bigger and tougher on the backend, so trading Hanifin now for a better fit is a good thing. Faulk seems to have reached his peak (a year ago) and if there are teams which wish overpay for his right shot, I'd have to listen to all offers. So yeah, Faulk and Hanifin for Center and Goalie help would be a good move.

Yeah we probably shouldn't. I don't come here to see what any of the rest of you think about politics and I'm sure you don't care what I think either. I also don't follow the NHL because I give a flip what the players think about politics either. So if they want to talk politics, and if we want to discuss it, it's likely to cause as many issues on the board as if we just openly talked politics - it would get ugly, and that would be a shame.

Tell ya what. We can discuss something when it actually happens. By that I mean the White House appearance. How about that?

And for the record ... I'm only asking rhetorically.

No. No it does not.

Do you seriously think the attitude that the Canadian hockey media has had regarding the Caps from day one of their existence doesn't have anything to do with their so-called non-traditional market? Because if so, you're dead wrong.

We look at DC now as an established NHL market with decades of solid support, but back in the Next Six expansion they got lumped in with the Seals, the Kings and the Blues and just got heaps of disdain dumped on them by the traditionalists. The Seals of course "proved everybody right" by failing miserably, but Pittsburgh NEVER took as much crap for sucking early on as Washington did. The Blues blew away the critics by being good right out of the gate, and LA was mocked early but grudgingly accepted over time ... largely due to Marcel Dionne being an all time great who publicly embraced the market with a convert's passion. But DC was always a redheaded stepchild to the Toronto and Montreal media and a culture of dismissing the Caps was firmly established. It's so deeply rooted that I don't even think hard liners like Damien Cox at the Toronto Sun are even aware of how quick they are to dismiss the Caps. It didn't help in recent years when the Caps were great but just couldn't get over the hump in the playoffs. That played into the loser market narrative neatly.

Screw it. Win and shut 'em up. That's always the answer.

I just don't count Warshington as Southern.

I became a true Hockey Fan around 1982. I don't know much about the NHL before that. I do know that anything that comes out of Toronto or Montreal should be taken with a grain of salt.

There is no way to get away from politics. If more people weren't afraid to talk about it, then maybe the narrative wouldn't always be controlled by extremist.

For the record, I'm not afraid to talk about politics, but this is NOT a political forum. We'll talk about politics as it pertains to the NHL, when it pertains to the NHL. That's been the board rule from day one and I see absolutely no reason to change that now.
