In private phone conversations with Carney’s predecessor, Justin Trudeau, Trump had threatened to scrap the 1908 agreement delineating their shared border. “I tear that up and your whole country unravels,” Trump told Trudeau in one call, according to two people familiar with the matter.
I’m not sure the article does Canada any favours tho in how Trump sees us
They are just treading water until the Democrats take the White House again. Which should be 2029, but it won’t be right away.I did have that thought while reading it. It essentially portrays Carney as one of the main, crafty organizers of an international resistance movement against Trump and American hegemony. And that if Trump was able to read, he’d be very mad while reading it.
But honestly, the cat’s out of the bag at this point. I don’t think anything can be done to ameliorate the fact that Trump hates us, wants to cripple our economy out of spite for resisting his advances and views Canada as nothing more than real estate he’d like to add to his portfolio to create a bigger, beautiful America that includes the entire North American landmass outside of Mexico.

There will be nonsense.
Remember, when Biden was sworn in, everything changed overnight. All the alliances returned. The same thing will happen again because there will be no fear of a Trump resurgence.I don’t think this is entirely true. While I do think that stalling for time is part of the strategy, I think there’s also a general recognition at this point that there’s no going back to “business as normal” with the US.
They are no longer a reliable ally, and permanent moves to lessen dependence on them for trade and defense are critical.
It also shouldn’t be taken as a given that the Democrats re-take power bloodlessly via the ballot box in the near future. Not with Trump and his backers in control of all the levers of power, and with zero interest in concepts like democracy, universal suffrage or the rule of law, if those things result in them no longer being in power and having to face consequences for their actions.

Trump may well be dead by then, too.
I didn't say it would be easy.....I think you’re being incredibly naive here.
Especially when we all just watched how spectacularly it backfired when Biden attempted to declare “America’s back”, return to a pre-Trump normal and turn the page on that era like it was a sordid chapter of a book that had thankfully been closed forever.
About 30-35% of the population of the USA seem pretty okay with fascism so it doesn't really end with Trump. Another Trump like figure is likely to emerge once the Democrats aren't able to fix every single problem they created in a 2-4 year time span. Thinking long term, the US as a whole isn't a dependable partner because their system is broken, their population brainwashed, and it's only going to get worse as the tech bros continue to gain more power and influence.
CorrectThis is it. Trade and alliances can’t operate on the uncertainty of waiting on pins and needles every four years to find out whether a steadfast democratic ally will turn into a super-powered fascist adversary based on how angry a few thousand swing voters in Ohio, Michigan or Pennsylvania are at that particular moment about trans athletes in high school sports.
And again, this is even presuming that free and fair elections with universal suffrage will be a thing in the United States in the near or long-term.
