New Canadian Politics Thread

what a bonkers election. Libs are at 49% of the popular vote, but may not win a majority.

anyone know when they were last so high in terms of popular vote? JT certainly never got that high

In the 2015 election, when Trudeau won a 14-seat majority, the Liberals had only 39.47% of the popular vote. Pretty wild.

yeah, this is where I am. a strong majority woulda hopefully spelled the end for PP, and maybe it was overly optimistic to think the CPC could return to general sanity.

but now, PP is gonna double down on his trumpista-lite style, and be government in waiting. and I think next election, he gets his majority.

but who knows.

seeing half the country vote red is definitely something at least. but the Con share of the popular vote also grew a ton. unlike zeke, I would not be happy to move into a clear two-party system. pretty crazy times we live in.

in fairness though, i feel like you're gonna have a huge amount of people voting for change anytime one party is in charge for a long time. just seems natural. and especially if that party is leading through a pandemic that resulted in inflation pretty much everywhere - they're gonna get blamed for it.

i'm gonna take it as positive that a lot people in spite of that still repudiated PP cozying up to trump/embracing trump style politics/American involvement in our elections.

of course i would've loved a majority though.

Oh yes. The stage was set for a Trumpian take over of Canadian politics. I am very proud of Canadians. Even those who voted CPC. Majority voted for economy rather than MAGA style hate.

Libs give the middle class a nice tax break and they'll win the next election.

Meh.

People are just now figuring out what the current fight actually is. This is a very good first step.

Now we get to see a very nice contrast between corrupt authoritarianism down south and competent economic leadership here (and hopefully with the support of a mostly unified non-US west), which should be a very helpful clarification.
