New Canadian Politics Thread

50+ born Canadian, native engish speaker with no education, job experience, or qualifications = 64 points. Add being a loon who didn't get vaxxed and they hit 74, welcome to Alberta.

Young w/ masters degree and decent IELTS scores, ~45 points. Sorry bud, have you considered Toronto?

Makes so much sense.

Not only does this keep the loons busy, but it keeps their trucks off the Ambassador and Gordie Howe bridges.

Has anyone dug into the hand wringing that Carney was mentioned in the files? I’m entirely uninterested in needing therapy from reading the heinous shit in the files but keep hearing right wingers railing about it

My understanding is that Carney’s name only ever came up in the files as the subject of news articles shared/discussed by people in the files, in his capacity as the head of both Canada & England’s central bank at the time.

The same goes for Justin Trudeau—he apparently came up as a subject of discussion on an handful of occasions among people actually in the Epstein files in his capacity of Canadian PM.

However I’ve heard absolutely nothing about either man having any personal dealings with Epstein or any of his associates. Even so much as an e-mail or friendly “hello”.

Of course, I’ve seen this being spun by cranks in memes of a happy Pierre Poilievre and his wife & kids, with a “zero mentions in the Epstein files” under his picture juxtaposed with Carney & Trudeau and the number of times they were mentioned in the Epstein files.

But, until I see at evidence to the contrary, it pretty much just seem to comes down to Carney & Trudeau being newsworthy people doing newsworthy things that people talked about, and Pierre Poilievre being a nobody backbench Canadian MP with zero accomplishments to his name that no one outside of Canada had heard of or cared about during the period of time the Epstein files are from.

Actually, my timeline is off. It goes back to the financial crisis and the Basel III regs to strengthen bank capital requirements. Carney supported them, much to the anger of Jamie Dimon.

Canadians shun U.S. travel: Air Transat cancels all summer flights to Florida

With Canada-U.S. relations rapidly deteriorating since President Donald Trump took office for his second term, tensions have shown no signs of slowing down as Canadian travellers have increasingly boycotted travel to the U.S. in the past year, and now with decline in demand, airlines have had to adjust, including Air Transat which announced it will cut flights to Florida this Spring and cancel them completely for the 2026 summer season. The destination is a favourite for many Quebecers.
“Canadians basically had a choice to make in terms of where they spend their discretionary dollars for vacation. And the choice started to be made last February, last March, and it’s now a year and Canadians continue to not spend their discretionary travel dollars in the US. And it’s got to a point where travel has dropped by about 30 per cent between Canada and the US. So it’s a continuation,” said John Gradek, the faculty lecturer of operations & integrated aviation management at McGill University.

With Canadians sharing mixed opinions on the matter, those who’ve chosen to boycott flying to the U.S told CityNews they’re looking at visiting destinations in South America and Europe instead.
“Carriers are, in fact, opening up new markets around North America. So, whether it’s the Caribbean, whether it’s Mexico, whether it’s Latin America, South America, more and more carriers are opening up new alternatives for people to spend their leisure dollars, and Canadians seem to like those new services being offered,” said Gradek.
For now, it’s unclear whether Air Transat will resume Florida flights for the 2026-2027 winter season, as the airline says its winter flight program is still undecided, leaving snowbirds waiting to see whether the tourism boycott of U.S. destinations will keep shaping airlines’ decisions.

I don't think it can be fully appreciated just how big of an own goal this was. The globalization skeptics spent the last ~10 years talking about how globalization was dead but that America was uniquely positioned to dominate the next 50 years because of geography and regional trade. Mexico was going to replace China as America's workshop of affordable goods and low-mid level tech, and Canada was going to remain their faithful raw material supply shop.

I just don't think it can be salvaged at this point even with a return of American sanity. It would take an apology tour and multiple generations of unwavering american political leadership to convince either of us to shift back in their direction.
