Jon Heyman: Yankees made big try for Samardzija, finish second. (LINK)

The Yankees, in need of a frontline starting pitcher with CC Sabathia out for the year, made a decent play for Cubs right-hander Jeff Samardzija before he went to the A's in a six-player blockbuster, according to source familiar with the talks. The Yankees thought they made a good enough bid only to finish second, sources said.

Interesting – guess Cashman is going to make a play for a frontline starter.
Hopefully he gets something done, but I'm also hoping he's looking for lineup upgrades because it's seriously needed.

The Yankees have acquired RHP Brandon McCarthy from the Diamondbacks in exchange for LHP Vidal Nuno.

The team also selected the contract of RHP Bruce Billings from the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.

In a corresponding move, OF Alfonso Soriano was designated for assignment.

The 31-year-old McCarthy was 3-10 with a 5.01 ERA (3.79 FIP) in 109.2 innings this season.

One important comparison: McCarthy's GB% this season is 55.3, Nuno's is 37.9. That should be huge at Yankee Stadium.

Billings is up to provide innings out of an overused bullpen.

Soriano has been terrible after a decent first month of the season (.247/.286/.433, 94 wRC+) and needed to go, but I'm still surprised they cut ties with him.

Ichiro now becomes the everyday right fielder, so Cashman should be on the lookout for an outfielder with power.

In the meantime, I expect Zoilo Almonte or Jose Pirela will be recalled tomorrow with a pitcher (Billings, Miller, Whitley) getting sent out.

If you go by today's Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lineup, Zoilo Almonte will be the position player joining the Yankees.

Shane Greene is expected to get the start in place of Nuno.
