I was overjoyed to see him in warmups and on the and - booom! - never saw him again. What a bunch of crap. He could have eaten some of Orpik's time. I wonder how this experience will affect his game when he returns? Will he doubt himself or will he come out firing to show the coaches what they missed?
 
I can't believe with the roster Canada has the most appealing option (and yes they are winning...whatever) is to trap and stick 5 guys in front of the goalie. The game against Sweden is likely going to be a snooze-fest. Sadly with the injuries that have come out of this, and the generally boring play in the games, the argument for South Korea in 4 years is not very strong. Shame really, because I normally love Olympic hockey but this year has been a bit of a dud.
 
Anyone else watching the bronze medal game? Macdonagh is partially responsible for the first two Finn goals and Bylsma keeps running him out there...while Faulk rides the bench.

Well Faulk should be fairly well rested upon his return. And anyone so inclined can boo bielsma a good one for me at next pens game just for general purposes.

Yes, Faulk played and like Lou, heard his name called a couple of times during the broadcast on the radio. Not sure how much he was out there, but like previous games, heard Orpick right much.
A;o sounded like Shattenkirk was lost out there at times, but that was via radio- did not see the game.

Didn't the Canes try and trade their two second round draft picks in the 2010 draft to jump up and scoop Cam Fowler? If that had worked, we likely would not have gotten Faulk. So quick question, who would you rather have knowing what you know now-- Faulk or Fowler?
 
At the draft, I was totally anti-Fowler. I felt like he was extremely overrated. I was glad he wasn't drafted here. But he has proven his detractors wrong, and has turned into quite the player. Would he have developed into that player in this organization? Who knows. And while Faulk has been a very solid player for his age, I think a lot of the hype around him, mostly from Canes fans, is over done. He's being pushed into a #1 position, but he's not a true top pairing guy on most NHL teams. He might get there....but the hype most Canes fans label him with is overzealous.
 
Faulk is definitely one of the many examples of micro-overslotting going on with our defense.

Mind you, it's a far better situation this season than the complete overslotting that was going on last season, where defensemen were routinely being placed in roles whole pairings above their skill package, pretty much from top to bottom.

Faulk could be a #2 to a more experienced #1 on a killer top-pairing. But would be more normally slotted on a second-pairing, mentoring for his eventual top-pairing role.

Sekera, surprisingly effective as he has been, is still over-slotted a half-notch from a more natural second-pairing role on a deeper D-corps. Ditto Hainsey, who would probably be best as the complementary player on the second pairing instead of the lead with some youngun' along for the ride.

See whichever youngun' is with him for another half-step or more overslotting from a bottom pairing role into the spotlight of the second pairing.

Again, better than last season, but we're still missing a big-time first pairing bundle of talent that would allow everyone to fall back one half-step into a much more compatible role for their skill packages.

Getting closer...but still not quite there.

Fowler, but Faulk can be good as well.

The US appeared to quit after falling behind in 2nd period. By the 3rd period it looks like they were more interested in packing their bags to return home than to take a shift on the ice. Overall a disappointing end result for a team that looked good heading into the medal rounds. Faulk is a popular topic on this board, but I don't think he would have been a factor one way or another. Two decisions that could have had more impact in the medal rounds are related to roster. The US missed a guy like Yandle, especially after Martin went down with injury. Yandle could have helped kick start some offense against Canada. I also think Ryan being left off was a mistake after the team managed to score one goal in the medal round. Hindsight is always great, but those two moves would have had more of an impact than worrying about Faulk getting more ice time.

On the flip side, Selanne is a freak on an athlete. 43....damn.
 
So...After 2 periods it's more of the same this game too. Again, while it's really cool that we have these superstar teams, it's not really exciting to watch impossibly stifling defense on this huge ice surface. I certainly wouldn't want to pay huge money to sit there and watch 5 highly paid superstars completely collapse to the middle of the ice and make it almost impossible to get any good scoring chances. Will be happy to see the NHL back. Canada has been involved in 2 of the most boring semi - final and finals in the Olympic history. They deserve to win but if this is the new Olympic hockey trend with the NHL participating then I won't miss them in 2018 if they don't go.

I honestly hope the NHL isn't involved in 2018. I'd like to see the US and Canada say "NO" to NHL players over the age of 20, etc. But you're going to screw up someone's season any way you slice it.
 
I was in Mexico for most of the tournament so this is the first game I've seen. Boring. Too much perimeter play. Yes, there is more room, but it's all between the face off dots and the boards.

With all the injuries this year, I can't see the NHL sending players to South Korea in 2018. If that's the case, we'll be back to Eastern European dominance, since the European leagues will almost certainly shut down and the North American representatives will be AHL scrubs.

Babcock admitted that the game plan was all about puck possession for Canada...and he also said the offensive firepower really never fired on all cylinders but the players executed what the coaching staff wanted from the get go. Most teams are there to win the tournament for their country, not put on the very best entertainment for the fans, so yeah I guess defensive hockey is boring but how many Cups did New Jersey win using the trap and they never apologized for playing a boring, stifling style of game.
