Another trick (not mentioned in the article) is posting a non existent high level position (like AI) and just sucking as much info as possible from would be applicants.

Those companies are monsters-- most applicants invest a lot of work and stress into crafting the perfect cover letter/cv/interview prep....then anxiously refresh their email for days/weeks....all for nothing

Yeah-- 98% of my gigs come from folks I know IRL. The HBC gig was being fed to me by the Linkedin algo. I never applied (sounds like a nightmare) but couldn't help notice the post when it popped up every 3 weeks for about 9 months. It was so strange, it became a running joke people commented on.

There's also a recurring post for a supervisory position with Canada Post at the main distribution centers in multiple cities. Either they aren't really hiring or their turnover is so high that the job must suck big time. Legitimate, good paying union jobs at Crown corporations should never be available with such frequency.

The new dream imo is to put up with corporate bullshit long enough to have a resume good enough to snag a work from home position, use the additional time flexibility (most "full time" jobs really require 15-20 hours of actual work that isn't office place time waste) to start a related side hustle (easy enough to start freelancing if you're in creative fields). Do good work, build out the client list and when your job starts becoming a hinderance to your business, punt the job and never look back.
 
I've been doing my current full time gig in 20hrs/week...now have to solidify a steady supply of side hustles

One of the most illuminating experiences of my current professional life was when a firm I was subbing for accidentally sent CC'd me on the invoice they were charging the client for my time.

It sure as fuck wasn't what they were paying me, and they were hardly abusing me monetarily either.

oh yeah. can relate. As a consultant I can tell you agencies are absolute bloodsuckers.

honestly, often these guys make huge money off your back and provide minimal value (no more than the initial intro a recruiter would do) for someone who is experienced

much better off as an independent. you can charge more and it will still be less than what those assholes would charge for you.

Would love to side hustle, but the ethics of it mean I couldn't perform my licensed practice for anyone else but my employer. That is some dream though. I think in 5 more years I just go out on my own and consult privately.
