I read the article. Explains why I see so many ghost positions that keep surfacing month after month. (there was a Creative Position at Hudson's Bay that popped up every 3 weeks)
Another trick (not mentioned in the article) is posting a non existent high level position (like AI) and just sucking as much info as possible from would be applicants.
Those companies are monsters-- most applicants invest a lot of work and stress into crafting the perfect cover letter/cv/interview prep....then anxiously refresh their email for days/weeks....all for nothing
Only way to win is not to play
