OT: American Politics

Trump again hyping up his announcement - says it's not necessarily about trade.

"We could sign 25 deals right now but we don't want to, they want to sign deals with us. They want a piece of our market"

Trump eats up flattery. This is a brilliant strategy.

Yeah, I'm mostly good with this as an opening salvo. The goal here is to get a deal, or get Trump to honor USMCA. I'm okay with opening up with pleasantries (that can be interpreted a few different ways tbh...) and letting his reaction dictate where we go. He's going to keep shitting himself with this 51st state nonsense, but we're in a better position to make our diversification moves away from the US if we're not bleeding jobs and in a deep recession.

I think Carney can outmaneuver this guy with a smile, maybe.

The core problem is that there's no consistency. I'm pleased that USMCA came up in this conversation because we don't need a new deal, we have a brand new fucking deal already. We just need our largest trading partner to fucking honour the deal he himself signed.

But that is going to be an ongoing issue with anything involving Trump.

Trump saying he doesn't want cars or steels from Canada at all, talking about deficits and subsidizing Canada.

Talking about governor Trudeau again.

I'm not watching, but it sounds like this is mostly going to script. Surface level flattery, go fuck your 51st state, we're stronger together.

If you can get him to concede on anything, it ends fairly quickly.

For all the talk about Biden and dementia, if you wait 5 minutes, Trump starts talking like it's a new conversation and goes back to the beginning.
