All rigid authoritarian states are useless. Their nature makes them administrative nightmares that can't actually do anything well when pressured. I get that westerners have been conditioned to hate the professional public bureaucracy and all, but it's the single biggest reason why we're better at pretty much everything to than centralized autocracies are.

Even the shining light of autocratic government's, China, organizes and runs their government similar to how we all do it.

Democracies beat authoritarian states fair and square and by far. Democracies weren't just morally right, they were just the more effective state administrator, rewarding competence over cronyism.

It would be pretty scary if an authoritarian state like china ended up just plain beating democracies at that game now.

Honestly don't think it's likely. Xi is about as close to the benevolent dictator/king as most systems are ever going to produce. A huge core problem with autocracies is that there's no formal and easy mechanism to get rid of an idiot who has politicked their way to power by mastering the inner party dynamics, but is brutal at understanding or giving a fuck about public policy (remember, most ideological autocrats believe that the purpose of power is to serve power, not to serve people who don't have power).

China is far more brittle than people think. It's hard to pick out the cracks when Pax Americana is mid seppuku though.
