OT: American Politics

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

thought the stewart stuff would be better

Ford gives hilarious soundbytes. Heck, he's funny even when he just stands there. It's hard for Stewart to improve on it.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Who's this Shiner character who voted with the Ford brothers?

Shiner is a process-first type of guy, and my understanding is he's voting this way only because it's not the proper way of doing things. He voted against Ford on the emergency response vote.

Congratulations to the Republicans for passing the "You Can Keep Your Crappy Plan" Act - what a stunning victory for the barely insured

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

"If I had a mayor acting like this, I would have done the same thing."

heh.

he legit thinks he's not allowed to treat himself like he treats others.
It's stunning that he can admit that he'd do the same thing in their situation, which is tacitly admitting that what they're doing is right and he's not fit to hold the job.

But then he can still immediately turn around and say that he's going to fight this in court and cost the taxpayers a whole ton of money.

When this guy eventually OD's, gets alcohol poisoning, dies while drinking and driving or commits suicide, hopefully the slush in his skull that passes for a brain is intact enough that they can do scientific studies on it.

funny thing it won't cost the city anything.

they have lawyers on salaries.

only way it could cost the city anything is if Ford won the case...and he won't.

Oh, it's on your computer?

Sorry then. It's impossible to get any kind of media from your computer to the Internet. Carry on.
I know how to post a picture if it's linked.

As far as I know the forum automatically re-sizes pictures when you upload the actual file.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

The only thing I don't like about what Council did today, and this speaks more to the province than it does to Council, is that they've established a historical precedent for the removal of mayoral powers from a Chief Magistrate.

What I'd like to see, just to safeguard against any future council taking this too far, is an amendment to the City of Toronto Act that specifically outlines circumstances under which Council is able to do this in the future.

The amendment should clearly outline the conditions under which a vote can be brought and should establish a supermajority threshold that the vote must meet in order to be effective. Something like three-quarters of the councillors present ought to be sufficient.
