OT: American Politics

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Fickle, yes. Though I think one thing worth noting is that for a second election in a row, the vast majority of MP's that Quebec's sending to parliament are from federalist parties.

Well, only kinda fickle. This twice in a row that they voted strongly against Harper and the CPC. But this time they voted for a party that other regions would also support.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

I'll actually be sad for Harper as this is hard for him and his family, i'm sure. But politics wise, a change was def needed.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

With this result, I'm left wondering if the Harper era would have happened at all if the Liberals weren't running Dion & Ignatieff out as candidates? The country was really willing to jump back into bed with the first charismatic Liberal leader we've had since Uncle Jean.

Or did it take 9 years of Harper being the cranky accountant in chief to turn people off of the CPC?

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

How much does this have to hurt Harper. He wanted the Liberals dead and gone. He hates the Trudeau family.

Yeah, this is beautifully poetic for someone with my feelings about Harper. This is now his legacy. He badly wanted to change the entire culture of Canada and shift it to the right permanently...in the end it appears that he got some legislation passed for a while that likely won't stand the test of time (mandatory minimums, census changes, etc) and the country was ready to dive back to the left as soon as they felt like they had a viable option....

and yeah, Trudeau's boy.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Ten years of silencing scientists and making Canada a country of shitty environmentalists was enough for me.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

speculation already starting that Harper will not take on the mantle of leader of the opposition.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

So how long before we can legally buy weed at our neighbourhood brothels?

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Yeah, it felt like Harper wanted to go backwards, to, "a simpler time," or something equally scary. Didn't get that we don't want that.

His type of politricks would have worked a little better before social media.

Harper's announcing his resignation tonight. He's got to. The's no way a power-hungry control freak like Harper wants to hang around for five years as a back-bench MP for an opposition party.

In the end, he never had the conservative chops to get it done. Conservative is not the same as cynical. Harper conflated the two.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

I'm still concerned about Corky's point regarding the media and its oh-so-powerful influence on the election. Oh wait --
