Back when I worked in a retail store, a paramedic was a regular customer, and she'd frequently without any prompting start ranting about how much she hated firefighters.

Firefighters, and the IAFF have done an absolutely amazing job and convincing the public and politicians that they are needed in excessive numbers to avoid calamity. They aren't heros, and we definitely don't need departments as large as the ones we currently have. The funny thing is they know it. They know that building standards and fire prevention had improved to the point where they have been add obsolete.
The reason why EMS hates fire is that we do significantly more than they do and we get none of the recognition. Our budgets are by in large significantly less than theirs yet we do many more calls. Perfect example, for the city of Hamilton, fre has a budget of 75 million, EMS we get ~32 million (only half of which is paid for by the city). We did 80,000 calls last year, fire did about 20,000. Of that 80% were medical calls, with only 1% of those being calls where fire was actually useful.
Plus I haven't jumped on the bs of them being able to do 24 hour shifts with a mandated 8 hrs of 'rest'. And that they get paid more.
So yeah fire can go **** themselves.

Not that I totally disagree, but as far as the cost of equipment and number of firefighters employed, it's a sort of unique situation. You have to have enough firefighters on staff to have a hope in hell of dealing with, say, the Sunrise propane disaster when they come up. Sure there are probably like 1% of firefighters fighting fires in a given day, but you can't just cut the force down to 1% (or even 10%) and hope the boys from the next town over get there before that highrise/chemical plant/historic church is totally in cinders. It's sort of like the millitary in that regard, I suppose. For the work they've been doing most of the last 60 years we have way too many soldiers, but if the day comes when you need as many as you can get (inevitable in a large city fire department) it starts to make sense.
