OT: American Politics

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

I've always found it hilarious how the Canadian middle class "by my own boot straps crowd" views themselves. Good on ya for doing the right things and making something of yourself, but you didn't have 100-120K (inflation adjusted) of student debt after 4 years of University. If you worked your way through Uni, you benefitted from minimum wage laws, collective bargaining, etc.... immensely. Society paid a significant cost to assist you in becoming what you are.

and you know what? I'm glad it did.

No, no, no. They're all like Ayn Rand and Horatio Alger super heros!

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

people like me aren't "in power". i didnt come from money or from a family that had political connections. i worked hard, followed the rules, did well in school, acquired important skills, worked my way up from joe jobs, supported myself through university, paid off my student loans, scrambled around in the beginning to catch on to the bottom rung of my career, and then kept working hard to earn a good paycheque. i didnt "occupy" anything when i was younger because i didnt have a highly paid job right out of highschool. i didnt expect to get a free lunch for tuition. other people shouldnt expect everything for nothing and then blame others when things arent going their way.

i'm not "in power", but that doesnt mean i have an ounce of sympathy for sandal-wearing, weed-smoking bongo players who want to occupy public spaces demanding everything for nothing.

To be fair, you didn't have anywhere the hurdles to deal with that recent grads do with now. For one, you could actually get a job quite easily. Now a degree is borderline worthless.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

why are the quebec student protesters being equated with the so-called 'lefties' here? most people here are firm centrists, not 'lefties'. and nobody here is particularly sympathetic to their 'struggle'.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Any comments/thoughts on the Daniel Dale-Rob Ford encounter?

I went to high school with Daniel and know his family personally, so obviously I'm a little biased, but I fully believe his account.

Kinda ridiculous for the mayor to go charging at a reporter with his fist cocked...

I dunno, I think it's rather convenient that Dale's cell phone and recorder just happened to go dead before this alleged altercation.

I also think the Toronto Star in general is taking their obsession with Rob Ford too far. I mean, the Toronto Sun is a looney rag that despised David Miller, but I don't recall even them sending out reporters to take pictures of Miller's backyard.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Feel free to look for the numerous, numerous videos of angry, violent actions at tea party rallies.

Go ahead and post them. Otherwise it's just another douchbag claim.

Meanwhile feast your eyes on the police dealing with garbage...

I use to subscribe to the Star for about a decade but in the last 4-5 years it has going completely haywire to the nutty left and to trash reporting. Sending out someone to skulk in Fords back yard at night is lunacy, but then again, I'm not surprised.

Do NOT be surprised if this escalates and Ford is hurt.

Does the village idiot in the White House identify with the hate mobs too? Is he going to launch an inquiry?

Mob beating of former Forum reporter in Virginia sparks media firestorm

FARGO – A former Forum reporter who was beaten by a mob has found himself caught in a media firestorm amid claims that his newspaper, The Virginian-Pilot, tried to practice “reverse racism” by burying the incident.

Dave Forster – who wrote for The Forum from 2002 to 2006 – was one of two off-duty Virginian-Pilot reporters attacked by a group of young black men while they drove home from a concert at the Attucks Theatre in Norfolk, Va., 2½ weeks ago.

“I am exhausted talking about it,” Forster told The Forum on Thursday. “The media storm has almost been crazier than the attack.”

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

You were reacting to a (ridiculous) student counter-offer, not a riot.
Oh please. I'm commenting on the bigger picture.

I know you have a soft spot for radical left wing behavior, but get a grip. These spoiled brats are rioting and trashing their city demanding free tuition and "social justice".

Even you can't support that...

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

I laugh at the people always talking about entitlement.... entitlement exists almost totally at the top of the economic/social ladder.

david miller never applied to buy public land so he could build a 'privacy fence' near his house.

and even if you think it's inappropriate for dale or the star to pry into the matter, there is a way you handle situations... and ways that you do not... and it seems as though ford's actions almost invariably fall into the latter category.

dale was not on his property. totally ignoring the fact that we don't have the same property protecting rights as are customary in the US, you can't physically threaten people the way he did, especially when they are on public property. and what a ****ing idiot, picking up the cell phone, charging it and using it.

as for the sun's treatment of miller, i recall them showing up at his home a few times as well. he just handled it in stride rather than making an issue of it like ford continues to do.
