OT: American Politics

Trump's sons, who are running his private business, are meeting with Republican leaders to discuss strategy & what would be helpful to Trump.

So much for separation between business and politics.

So uhhh...he's a **** and all, but this looks like more than just being tired

It's something of a shame that old people vote in stronger numbers than "young" (let's say, under 50), because they tend to prefer other older candidates who are far liklier to have major medical issues, varying levels of dimentia, etc.

We saw how much the job aged Clinton, GWB, and Obama

Trump is already an old, unhealthy bag of shit to start his presidency. There's almost zero chance he comes out of this unbroken physically.

ya, nobody home in that clip,

Violence against the media is a big check mark for a fascist regime.

As far as policy is concerned, most foreign policy imbroglios are largely irrelevant in Joe Six Pack's day to day. It's largely symbolic. But health care? That's where the Trumpanzees have been taken for raging suckers. The Dems need to blow that up big time for 2018. Sadly, I don't think a lot of voters care about fixing immigration or civil rights.

we're still paying for the gw whitehouse's (and obama's) transgressions in the ME.

trump's also.... unique... along with the positions he has taken.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

CPC leader votes. Bernier slowly inching his way towards victory. Scheer and the so-con branch with a large showing.

*Scheer closes in on the 2nd last ballot. Bernier up 40-38 heading to the final results.

*And it looks like Scheer might pull ahead in the end. At least while they wait for the last ballot results, his poker face isn't really very good.

*Scheer wins it with 51% of the vote on the final ballot.

Too bad Michael Chong didn't do better---he's really the only one in that crop that I liked much.

And especially disappointing that they've decided to elect a social conservative as their leader in this day and age.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Scheer= Stephan Dion.

So so guy who wins a bit over 50 percent of his party's support just to keep out the other guy and will get destroyed in the election.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

At least its not Kellie Leitch, but still Scheer is a pretty poor choice. Not a fan of SoCon views.

Yeah, that's one positive story out of this convention.

She maxed out at about 7% of the vote, I believe, and was never higher than 7th or 8th on the ballot.

So, even within the Conservative party, there's little to no appetite for a leader who's an outright xenophobe.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

A western conservative with a relatively socially conservative background, who barely speaks french.

Congratulations Justin, on your 2nd majority government.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

The other leading candidate wasn't all that great at speaking English, but then again neither was Chretien and he managed quite well for several years. He comes across as more pragmatic than most of the multitude vying for the job. Time will tell. Since I didn't really follow the race that closely, I'll save my judgment until I see how he performs.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

English Canada is far more forgiving of a federal politician from Quebec with shaky English, than Quebec is of an English politician with trash French.

The odds of the feds treating the anti government nutters like the terrorists they are is roughly nil though.

sad thing is the fbi has been pretty good about going after domestic terrorists. they've got tabs on far more of them than muslim imports. hopefully that doesn't change.

on another note, what still pisses me off about all the recent major terrorist attacks is that almost every single one of them was committed by someone the police already had tabs on. that's just a failure of policing. not some unsolvable problem.
