The number of people who don't know who Scheer is is down to 28 percent, from somewhere around half.

Conservatives have only gone up in this time. And again, it doesn't matter when 51 percent of canadians start thinking it's a time for a change in government. Vote the bums out doesn't really care about the other bums they vote in.

Liberal minority is where I think it lands. I think Scheer will turn enough people off with his cookie cutter religious conservative rhetoric "radical islamic terrorism!!!" and dog whistling "freedom of speech on campuses" (aka, stop shouting down anti abortion groups or we'll take away your funding) stuff that the left with coalesce in defence of Trudeau.

He's been a pretty vocal opponent against gay marriage in the past and has only appeared to approve of window dressing changes to the Conservative playbook on in the issue so that it's not poisonous to them.

-Also against assisted suicide,
-Has run to the defence of creationists whenever possible.
-Anti marijuana and has refused to go on record recently as to whether or not he would try to repeal the MJ act as PM
-Prefers "private sponsorship" (aka, christian churches bringing over members of their own) over government sponsored refugees and immigrants

I live out west and run into western conservative attitudes quite a bit...that's all this guy is. A well polished version of the same shit kicker conservative logic I hear idiots in Alberta rattling on about regularly with a side order of christian religiousity.

He's a slightly more conservative version of Stephen Harper who can smile without looking like a serial killer with plastic hair.

Canada is still a centre-left country. "Vote the bums out" can be powerful, but wait until Eastern Canada gets to see who this twit Scheer actually is. The Liberals will turn this into a wedge issue election while Scheer tries to make it a referndum on Trudeau. I think the wedge issues will carry a lot more weight, I don't care what the polling now says. We've seen all sorts of faceless nameless conservatives in Ontario politics over the years poll extremely well until they open their mouths. I get that provincial /= federal , but it has very much turned into an Ontario tradition. Conservative poll fantastically well until they open their mouths and then Ontarians go running back to the Liberals. There's a pile of shit in Scheer's playbook that simply won't fly with Ontario votes, and they're the ones driving the bus in the next election (and almost every federal election).

Over history the party that leads Ontario is usually always different than the party that leads Canada. Going by history the PC's getting stronger in Ontario is good for the federal Liberals.

While at some point Scheer may shoot himself and his chances in the foot, I'm looking at the damage the Liberals seem intent on doing to themselves in the meantime.

The past year has been a unmitigated disaster both at home and abroad, the economy (which you seem to focus on) is cooling, NAFTA might be dead, the pipelines are getting bogged down by dueling NDP governments with the Feds not taking a leadership role, MJ is facing delays and provincial governments ****ing around with how it's being distributed, peacekeeping is delayed and a mess and this is before body bags start heading home.

I don't like Scheer, or the cons, but I wont sugar coat just how bad a year this government has had, and how another like it will sink them simply by Sheer having a pulse.

Scheer's flaws are well documented here.

Singh has basically only been in the press since becoming leader for making a big splashy marriage proposal, and appearing to, at a minimum, be pretty sympathetic with the cause of Sikh separatism. He even wrote an op-ed in the Globe where he seemed to almost double down.

So sure, Liberals polling numbers are falling. But what is the credible alternative?

That’s one way of protesting Andrew McCabe’s firing as deputy FBI director, roughly a day before he was set to retire: At least one Democratic congressman has offered McCabe a temporary job so he can get full retirement benefits — and McCabe appears to be considering.

Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., announced Saturday afternoon that he has offered McCabe a job to work on election security in his office, “so that he can reach the needed length of service” to retire.

“My offer of employment to Mr. McCabe is a legitimate offer to work on election security,” Pocan said in a statement. “Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of American democracy and both Republicans and Democrats should be concerned about election integrity.”

A spokeswoman for McCabe, Melissa Schwartz, didn’t immediately rule out a job with one of the most liberal members of Congress, which might only need to last for a day or so for him to get his full retirement benefits: “We are considering all options.”

Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., tweeted that he’d consider hiring McCabe, too.

It’s not immediately clear if getting fired from the FBI on a Friday and going to work on Capitol Hill on a Monday would solve McCabe’s problems for certain, though at least one former federal official with knowledge of retirement rules says it probably would.

McCabe’s team is confident that he had at least 20 years of law enforcement work under his belt — defined as carrying a weapon or supervising people who do — which made him eligible to retire on his 50th birthday on Sunday, with full retirement benefits.
