OT: American Politics

The slight glimmer of hope I have is that there appears to actually be a generation of young democrats coming through that don't fuck around and don't appear to be afraid to bring the hammer down and have their own little mini nuremberg when this is all said and done.

I don't know if Donnie has done enough damage here to overthrow the whole thing before he dies. They're trying but there seems to be just enough pushback to keep the project going for now. The mid terms are a big big test of that though. Fuckery is pending.

I'm hopeful lately but I seem to always overestimate American smarts

Yeah, any bit of hope is always tempered by the fact that 35-40% of people in every survey seem to be fine with :insert nazi shit: and the theories on autocracy I'm familiar with put ~30% public approval as the floor for a stable autocracy (assuming that the elite class is on board). So Trump's public support is still well above the minimum required. Also not technically an autocracy as of yet, but I don't know how much overthrowing an election would matter to public support. He's already attempting to overthrow one and it didn't seem to hurt him much.

Probably be always the case in a two person race where the "other person" will still get a good chunk of the vote not mater how loathsome they might be unfortunately.

Maybe. Also possibile that we're living through a time where the neo confederancy is in ressurgence and 35% of the country is down with racist, nazi shit because it's Murica and racist nazi shit has never been very far under the surface if you looked a bit.

I’m skeptical the Dems will ever be able to take control, even if they win big in the midterms. Mike Johnson is certainly not going to stand up to orders from the White House not to seat elected Democrats. He’s constitutionally required to, but like the entire party, he’s much more personally loyal to Dotard than the constitution. So I don’t see Republicans giving up control. They’ll just find a pretence not to transfer power (alien immigrant asylum voter lasers fraud!) and carry on governing.

It’s what happens in other countries, even those with a more modern constitution and engaged citizenry. The US is not special.
