OT: Movies/TV Shows

I’m a big Tim Rob fan (Detroiters, ITYSL) but I can’t get into his longer form stuff — I found The Chair Co and Friendship both mid

Detroiters is quietly the goat, his friendship with Sam made for some of the most fun 30 min television of the 25 years. Can still rewatch it endlessly.

While I enjoyed Friendship, I do kinda agree it’s the most mid of his pieces, but still had some incredible laughs in it.

I’d give The Chair co another go tho….i think that’s maybe his best work and commentary on toxic masculinity that he’s done yet, and works especially well because it’s grounded in a world where he already has a successful job he’s respected at, a great loving family….and despite all that, his male insecurity is the thorn in his paw that leads to all the insanity.

Also has great commentary on why people fall for conspiracy theories, how it gives them this false sense of intellectual superiority, etc etc….I thought the more grounded elements of the show made the absurdity that much funnier too.

His buddy Mike, boss Lou Diamond Phillips (especially when out in the dessert with his other rich buddies), or Alberto Isaac as Oliver Prabblo who had me howling.

I thought Connor O’Malley’s scene with Tim in the garage when Tim’s at his drum kit was pure gold too.

The chair company is excellent. It's amazing how Tim can keep some of the complete absurdity of human behaviour from his other shows and put it into a more of a real world environment and it still works. I

I really thought the family dynamic and how well they were cast/written took his stuff to another level…..cause it just made it all that much more poignant when you’re laughing at his freakouts/breakdown knowing amazing life he had at home, but his insecurities prevent him from properly appreciating.

He touched on it a bit with Friendship, but I didn’t think it quite worked…..but with Chair Company it’s pitch perfect imo. 👌🏼

Think you guys will enjoy Slow Horses, I’d seen 1&2 already, but me and the gf have torn through seasons 3, 4, and 5 and she’s enjoyed it as much as I have. She was originally pretty repulsed by Gary Oldman’s Jackson Lamb, but now he’s her favorite character with all his snide biting commentary.

Re: The Chair Company. Tim's character clearly has a mental illness (OCD?) that has been shown to spiral out of control at times of great stress.

He is an asshole with anger management issues, but his kids clearly love him, and his wife tolerates him (maybe?).

Conspiracy chasing is a coping mechanism that he uses to gain a little bit of control over his life and a distraction that even his daughter uses to escape her bad relationship. He is lonely.

What I like about the show is how it takes the tonal shifts seriously, and it is a pretty good thriller with comedy all around the edges.

Been putting it off for some reason, but will definitely be diving into this eventually.
