OT: My Team's Season

Hey, with hitting in the game next season how does that change your tryout philosophy? Will there be any changes on the team with contact now in play? It will be an interesting transition for some of the kids.

It will a little. Last season we thought body checking was still going to be allowed at major pee wee. It wasn't until after my team was picked that Hockey Canada changed it. It hurt some players this past season.

Size is always key, but I like size and speed. Not everyone has that. To me size isn't the number one factor. It's more grit.

Try-outs start tonight, I've always liked the process. You go in thinking one way and that can change very quickly.

Typically yes, I agree. However, this is now the first year for body checking so size, grit and toughness become more of a factor...

We had checking in minor pee wee. Some of my more skilled guys thrived with the contact and some didn't.

If I'm looking to replace a player, its a 6th Dmen or 9th forward. So year grit would play a factor.

My boy has Spring tryouts in a few weeks. His coach is Shean Donovan this year and he's a great guy who loves kids that can skate and have high skill level. We moved to the Ottawa Valley so he's changing teams as he played for the Ottawa Sting this past year. Since we moved he actually gets to bypass Spring tryouts and go right to the final skate in August. Good luck with your selections...

So he will be a Titan now? What age group is he going into now? Those ex-pros usually know a lot of great drills. I'm sure having him as a coach will only help with his development.

He's Major Atom so he'll play for the Ottawa Silver Seven. Titans AAA does not start until Major Peewee but he'll be with them then. Donovan played for the Titans when he was younger. There is quite a few ex nhl guys that run programs here. Mike Eastwood runs the Kanata 02 team and they have been top 3-4 in Ontario for a few years now. In Ottawa we usually have parent coaches until Minor Bantam or Major Peewee AAA. Sometimes that is good and sometimes not...
