OT: The Because Science Thread (Now With Aliens!)

As a guy who used to be an uber-space nerd and desperate to see humans finally leave low-Earth-orbit again at some point before I die---I'm honestly shocked at how little excitement I'm able to muster about this Artemis mission.

Was talking about it to one of my Uncles too on the Easter weekend. This guy is an even more massive space exploration fanatic than I ever was---he was practically bouncing off the walls with excitement when James Webb was launching. But he was probably even less interested in Artemis than I am.

Neither of us could really put a finger on it, but I guess it maybe just comes down to it being extremely hard, for obvious reasons, to get excited about anything to do with the United States these days. There's also the fact that there's no viable moon lander yet, and the two fascist bozos in charge of getting one built are Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk.
 
I'm excited because there's a new space race hopefully brewing. China has said they're going to have a moon base by 2035 and there's good reason for the US to want to beat that. This mission is a step towards that goal. I agree the US being evil takes the joy out of it, but the fact that China has decided to push the agenda a little bit is a good thing.

It's not a conscious decision, unfortunately.

Very much wish I could give a shit and be excited about it, but I just don't, and can't.
 
I had mild interest in this mission until today and I did make a point to watch them return from the dark side.

I think the only other time I was really caught up in the various space adventures was the 1969 moon landing. I even stayed at work for an extra hour so that I wouldn't miss it.
