A Florida man with lofty career goals took a misguided approach to his future earlier this month when he lit a fire in the hopes of becoming a county firefighter, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
The newspaper's FloriDUH blog reported firefighters and police responded to a call on July 6 about a fire at the East Hernando library branch in Brooksville, Florida. When they arrived, an 18-year-old man dressed in full firefighting garb stood nearby.
Police later issued a statement saying the man had bought his outfit on eBay, started the fire in the library and then waited to help extinguish the flames, according to the Sun-Sentinel.
They didn't let him help. In fact, the sheriff's office called him in for an interview about his suspicious behaviour, according to the story. At first the man said he had heard the emergency call on a police scanner and came to help.
Finally, he admitted to setting the fire that caused $500,000 in damage.
Police have Joseph Michael Brannen with second degree arson, according to Hernando Today. His bail was set at $3,000 and he's due to appear in court on Aug. 8.
As several commenters joked, let's be thankful he wasn't an aspiring murder investigator.
Could have been worse. What might he have done if he wanted to be a cop, or maybe work with an anti-terrorist group?
DETROIT -- A man who wanted to prove he could swim across the Detroit River from Canada to the U.S. after a night of drinking ended up prompting an international rescue operation.
John Morillo told The Windsor Star that Monday night's swim from Windsor, Ontario, to Detroit, was "really stupid" and said in retrospect he shouldn't have done it. He was cited for being intoxicated in a public place and released from jail Tuesday.
"I was drinking, but I wasn't really drunk," Morillo, 47, of Windsor, said Tuesday. "The thing is, I've been telling people I'm going to swim across the river for years and they're like 'yah, yah, blah, blah, you can't make it.' So, I don't know, last night I just decided it was the time to go."
Morillo said he regrets causing problems for authorities, including Windsor police and Coast Guard crews from the U.S. and Canada. Three boats and a helicopter responded, The Detroit News reported, and authorities warn the river's current makes a dangerous place to swim.
"As soon I saw the helicopters going by and the boats looking for me, I was like 'oh, this is really stupid,"' Morillo told The Windsor Star.
Police in Windsor initially responded around 11:30 p.m., when a neighbour of Morillo called to say she had lost sight of him about a half-hour earlier.
Remember KB's rant about how the media portrayed Zimmerman as a loose cannon with a gun unfairly? Check out the latest:

So much for the media bias against Zimmerman. Now, they're kissing his ass.
Late Monday afternoon, we obtained the sheriff’s accident report which states there was an incident last Wednesday. The report identifies the adults in the flipped vehicle as a white couple with unnamed kids. The driver is Mark C. Gerstle, a pharmacist (his registered pharmacist details) & a native of Buffalo N.Y., & the woman is Dana Michelle Muffoletto Gerstle, a native of Daytona Beach, Fla. They live in Port Orange, Florida.
Longtime supporter (& one source still being investigated by NB is claiming friend) of George Zimmerman, Officer Patrick Rehder’s cell phone records reveal a text or call to George Zimmerman right after the 5:47 PM crash was called in. This tipped Zimmerman off to the car crash accident & to get there to assist the family before Officer Rehder arrived. Zimmerman, still hiding out in the same neighborhood that he killed Trayvon Martin in, was less then a mile away to jump into action & be a hero with his passive aggressive approach KNOWING that his name on the police report would eventually be made public. We didn’t give Zimmerman enough credit – he had a larger role in orchestrating this then we thought was possible. The phone records, coupled with a source confirming to NB that George Zimmerman is in possession of a police scanner (like the wannabee cop he continues to be) so that he can listen in to accidents in the area “in need of a super hero.”

Guess 1972 was a big year for divorce, and gay unions.
Canada's crime rate lowest since 1972

Canada's police services are once again reporting fewer crimes, a continuing trend that has cut the national crime rate to its lowest level since 1972.
Impossible, I have it on good authority that we as a society are awash in crimes, both reported and non. Why, a friend of a friend of a friend was a victim of a crime within the last year, surely we should all be in fear.
