OT: The News Thread

I thought it was the dinosaurs getting wiped off the planet that allowed us to come down from trees.

I mean since we were all on the earth at the same time.

link is broken, but I will try to find you an article by Carl Zimmer in the NYT. It suggests that a major evolutionary jump for humanity came from, wait for it...........

Monagamy

Once men stuck around and started hunting and foraging for their offspring, the extra calories allowed for increased brain size, which is our main advantage over every other species on the planet.

how do you like them apples, traditional marriage-bashers?
First of all, you spelled 'monogamy' wrong, you raging idiot.

Secondly, gay marriage is looking to do just that, enshrine their rights as a monogamous couple.

Actually the primary evolutionary leap forward occurred as a result of agriculture. Hunting and gathering incurred an opportunity cost that resulted in the opposite of what you suggested: not enough calories.

It was the result of vast increases in food production and surplus calories that provided humanity with the additional time and energy expenditures necessary to implement sedentary living, design cities, and have the arts and sciences flourish as a result of not requiring all of their labour to be devoted to food production.

U dont think settling down and farming relates to monogamy?

Monogamy resulted from structured societies, not the other way around. It also discouraged more outright displays of hypergamy, which could otherwise result in closure of access to resources.

What an absolutely stupid argument.

"You know what is best for society? MONOGAMY!".

No shit, that's exactly what the gays want to do.

true but monogamy has always been more myth than substance. All the societies that allegedly were monogamous all had both men and women getting it on the side

Korea's extreme desire to show that monogamy is allegedly the be all end all is quite misguided

he also assumes that farming back in prehistoric times meant individual farms run by individual families which likely is not the case

So you're saying that the serf system is the way to go then?

"traditional" = better, or so I've been told.

The belief in monogamy is definetley a christian value but christianity also values things like punishment and obedience. This is in large part why women were second-class citizens for so long because it is the woman who had to practice obedience to the husband and if she cheated she brought shame to the family. And we know that any sex before marriage is frowned upon.

On the other hand, in pre-colonial times, many indigenous tribes treated women equally and allowed them to take part in politics and be judged on performance and their preferences. Casual sex was much more common and accepted because of the way they lived and the values they believed in. For one, they lived in communal, with a non-hierarchal structure. Plus they valued relationships, relationships with other humans but also their relationship with nature and the environment.

The point is; it is much more important that a society treats its people equally.(ie allow gays to marry) It is less important what we think about monogamy. Casual sex may be bad but judging people, outlining what things they are capable of or not capable of, is much worse.

You do realize that agriculture is relatively new to H.sapiens sapiens, right? We're talking within the last 10,000 years. And that agriculture in the Neolithic has nothing in common with modern agricultural practices.

Mehh.....all you people and your endless argument over marriage...

I want to legalize polygamy. That's it. Nothing more. I figure if one woman can drive us crazy, then three can either finish the job quickly or fight with each other and leave us alone.

Who agrees?
