Woman's nose severed in Toronto elevator attack

An elderly woman's nose was severed during an attack that occurred in a downtown Toronto elevator, police say.

Toronto police say the woman had just got off a streetcar, near Yonge and Dundas streets, when she was approached by a man at about 2 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Police say the woman was attacked by the man when she was on an elevator at nearby Dundas Square.

The man involved in the attack fled the scene.

Police say the suspect is a 40- to 60-year-old male, who is between 5'6" and 5'8" in height.

aaaand score one for the "religion /= morality" crowd

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=just-thinking-about-science-triggers-moral-behavior

Researchers at the University of California Santa Barbara set out to test this possibility. They hypothesized that there is a deep-seated perception of science as a moral pursuit — its emphasis on truth-seeking, impartiality and rationality privileges collective well-being above all else. Their new study, published in the journal PLOSOne, argues that the association between science and morality is so ingrained that merely thinking about it can trigger more moral behavior.

The researchers conducted four separate studies to test this. The first sought to establish a simple correlation between the degree to which individuals believed in science and their likelihood of enforcing moral norms when presented with a hypothetical violation. Participants read a vignette of a date-rape and were asked to rate the “wrongness” of the offense before answering a questionnaire measuring their belief in science. Indeed, those reporting greater belief in science condemned the act more harshly.

Of course, a simple correlation is susceptible to multiple alternative explanations. To rule out these possibilities, Studies 2-4 used experimental manipulations to test whether inducing thoughts about science could influence both reported, as well as actual, moral behavior. All made use of a technique called “priming” in which participants are exposed to words relevant to a particular category in order to increase its cognitive accessibility. In other words, showing you words like “logical,” “hypothesis,” “laboratory” and “theory” should make you think about science and any effect the presentation of these words has on subsequent behavior can be attributed to the associations you have with that category.

Russian police raided an art gallery late Monday to seize a painting that depicted President Vladimir Putin and former Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev in women’s underwear.
Authorities said the satirical piece in the “Museum of Power” gallery in St. Petersburg, which has Putin in a slip dress combing the hair of Medvedev – who is wearing a bra – had broken unspecified laws, Reuters reports.

(CNN) -- Shellie Zimmerman, the wife of acquitted neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, pleaded guilty Wednesday to a misdemeanor charge of perjury.

She will be placed on probation for one year and is required to file a letter of apology to Judge Kenneth Lester.

George Zimmerman was acquitted by a six-person jury in July on second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in the killing of Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida.

Prosecutors allege Shellie Zimmerman lied when she told a judge during a bail hearing for her husband in April 2012 that the family was indigent. In fact, they argue, George Zimmerman actually had about $135,000 at the time.

Relatives of Hannah Anderson are now coming out and saying it is not as cut and dry as it seems.

However, the Sheriffs department seems to have shut the case and doesn't want to hear anything else about it.

This case is so fishy. So much so that now even a media outlet like CNN which for the longest time was just making it seem cut and dry are now starting to talk about the unanswered questions.

The sister of DiMaggio was on Morgan Tonight last night and said she warned her brother three weeks prior to the event that Hannah was trouble.

I've thought from the start she had a romance with the guy and was complicit in the slayings of her family. The authorities are giving her the attractive blonde pussy pass in this instance.

They found two used condoms with semen in it for God's sake. What did they think her and DiMaggio were doing with the dozens of texts? Why didn't she attempt escape? Why was he killed? It's all too convenient.

Also JCY, what teenager sends her fathers best friend hand written notes about so called problem about her parents?

I love how the media keeps referring to her as child. I am sorry, look at the teenagers who killed a 88 year old veteran last week, they should be classified as children as well.

Seen the pictures 15 year olds are posting online lately. Just seeing the stuff some of my teenage cousins have been posting on their Facebook pages is shocking enough to me. Teenagers are not as innocent as they used to be.

Not that it justifies anything that happened in this case, but I understand your point.
I will counter with the fact that kids are oblivious to the mistakes they are making. I saw a picture I should not have been able to see online simply because the tween that posted it to her friend didn't realize that the site allows friends of her friends to see them too. It's not so much that they're not as innocent anymore. They're actually clueless and far too trusting as well.

Trying to remember when teenagers where ever innocent. My god the stuff we did at that age...

A romance or statutory rape? I mean this girl was practically around this creep for all of her life...how long has he had to run his mind games on her? I think you are premature in your assessment...

Why was he killed? I don't understand that point...are you angling at a cover up or something? Curious....

No.

I was 12, 22 years ago and I got blown at summer camp. It was a hilarious, awkward experience in hindsight. Awesome and slightly terrifying at the time.
