OT: The News Thread

That's not very compelling reasoning to have anthems. Have one final horn before the game and then take the face-off. Only international events should have anthems.

Well that's kind of it...it's not apples to oranges, it's apples to bigger apples. As far as societies and culture goes, we're more or less identical. Similar racial, cultural, religious, economic breakdowns, etc. Most of the differences between us is window dressing....except for that one, with the whole "an assault rifle in every pot" bit.

I agree. The gun culture in America is imo simply a reflection of having a more broad or extreme interpretation of individual freedoms and individualism. (the interpretation is of course in large part tied to the constitution, though there is disagreement on the 2nd amendment and what it means) But there is certainty a lot of commonality between USA, Canada, and Britain..but the one that's the most key in terms of why individual rights have won over in these societies is their geography. When societies fear their neighbor, and feel threatened, they turn to collectivist attitudes, and in that scenario, you could argue that it's almost necessary. I see this sort of collectivist mentality in the Balkans and a lot of it is not trusting the neighbors.

Yulin Dog Meat Festival 2016: 10,000 dogs to be killed and eaten at China's annual food event
Dogs are kept in cages, inhumanely killed on the street and served as 'dog hot pot'

China’s annual Yulin festival, in which thousands of dogs and cats will be murdered and eaten, has begun despite widespread international condemnation.

An estimated 10,000 dogs and cats are expected to be used for meat during the 10 days of the festival, which takes place at Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region in the south-east of the country.

Campaigners say the practice is cruel and a petition has amassed 2.5 million signatures calling for it to be banned, but local government officials say it is organised by private businesses and they are unable to prevent it.

What do you mean? I don't get why dogs get some noble status and we should be outraged by this.

Dogs are a domesticated animal and have been used for hunting, companionship, and useful working tasks for literally close to 50,000 years in every human society. They're a sentient creature of high intelligence and affection.

Most current breeds of dog are specifically bred for companionship. You don't get things like bulldogs or corgis naturally in the wild.

You're surprised that people would be outraged that the second most common pet in the world, owned in tens of millions of households globally, is brutally tortured and slaughtered, then consumed?

It's also bizarre to be eating carnivores from a biological standpoint.

But then again, I find people who don't like dogs to be strange themselves so...

I didn't say I was surprised, I'm just no more bothered by it than the barbaric treatment of most animals we eat. And by volume is a drop in the bucket.

I love dogs, and I've had them for the vast majority of my life, so I do find butchering them for meat to be pretty repugnant.

Then again, as a guy who enjoys getting as many different kinds of meat as possible on one pizza, I recognise the cognitive dissonance there. And if you examine some of the animals I regularly eat more closely, pigs are extremely intelligent, and I'm sure there are plenty of people who think lambs or cows are as cute as dogs. And all those animals are domesticated too.

So, I dunno if I can credibly manufacture any outrage about a dog-meat festival. I think the main things you could really point the finger at would be the accusation that the sellers are rounding up pets, and that they're torturing some of the dogs to death in the twisted belief it makes the meat taste better.

Obviously we are going to have a reaction to that kind of treatment of dogs and cats because they are family to us not food. I hate when people throw out that comparison. I get the point, but its not about the comparing the barbaric treatment but rather those animals presence in our every day lives.

That has nothing to do with whether or not we should also be disgusted about the inhumane treatment of the animals we do it eat. We probably should be. The treatment of living beings in those mass production factories is pretty horrific. Its probably not the healthiest to be eating either. They just taste so good though.
