OT: The News Thread

I think the possibility might exist that there is a heaven, or that we are re-incarnated (if one takes the stories about our ability to astral project seriously), but I've never believed in the concept of hell. There is no reason why a supposedly benevolent God would create such a place.
 
I am in no way espousing this theory...but if I was into this kind of thing I'd say that maybe (from a Christian viewpoint) Hell is the absence of god. You could think of heaven as this idea of becoming one with the power of the cosmos, so hell would be being cut off from that. Beats the idea of eternally burning as some kind of punishment.

All crazy talk as far as I'm concerned, but what do I know?
 
My only issue with that is how explicit the bible is (in just about all things covered within it's covers).

That's one of my major qualms with Christians, very few of them are actually Christians. They've started to apply rational thinking to their holy scriptures, realized how silly a bunch of it is and discarded the chunks that obviously seem at odds with reality.

That's not the way these religions work when you actually examine the texts.
 
In is difficult to know just how explicit it is. We are reading a translation of documents parts originally written in different languages. None of them english. It was also written during a different era and had to be understood by a poeple of a very different knowledge base than those of later years. I think we get the gist of what it is saying, but it is difficult enough to get exact translation and meaning from say Elizabethean english to today'senglish, let alone from early Hebrew and Greek,
 
The Bible (new testament and old) are both very explicit on the matter of heaven and hell....as well they go into great detail concerning the stories of moral example that the religion is built on.

I agree that translations are dodgy by nature, but I don't think that applies on that particular example (heaven & hell)

I'm 6'1 240 pounds...I typically feel comfortable saying whatever I want to whomever I want to say it to.
 
Btw, there's a 0% Hitch had a death bed conversion. The man was many things, some I agreed with, some I didn't, but the one thing he never, ever, ever was, was a coward. And given everythign he believed, wrote, thought and said, it would the height of cowardice to have changed his mind.

I'll be having a drink in Hitch's honour, because that's what the great man would have wanted.

But let's not explore that idea when I visit LV. For some reason I think you and I would get along awesome to be honest.
