OT: The News Thread

It just makes sense that if you let your body build up resistance that you'll be better off down the road.

All these flu shots are doing is crippling your natural immunity. Now there is evidence that they are also causing narcolepsy??? and people are still advocating getting them?

Why?

watched the munk debates on Iran. as usual, fareed zakaria owned all with his knowledge and understanding of world history, and his unbiased approach. krauthammer came off as an angry old grump with outdated views. I see why kb loved him so.

because public officials convince the ignorant masses to get them via scare tactics on the boob tube.

IF that is true, their scare tactics aren't very scary.

They need to hire the folks who do the anti-tobacco and drunk driving ads.

I know you weren't directly comparing them, but there is a sizeable difference from being afflicted with cramps and a fever for three days and getting throat/mouth/lung cancer or emphysema and dying young due to behavioural choices.

No I wasn't comparing them that way - I was talking about alfamale's assertion that it is all some kind of scare tactic designed to get people to take some government shot....the ad campaigns lack the scare....I have never taken a flu shot so I just think their ad campaign could be ramped up if that is indeed the design goal.

If you are a child, or an elderly person (or work closely with either group) then get the shot.

If you are a 30 year old getting the shot they you are stupid.

Not stupid....some people play different roles in life and need more protection...nothing wrong with that. It's not like these vaccines are simple placebos that have no real world effects...they DO work after all.

The only time in my life I've ever gotten the flu was when I got the shot.

There is no benefit.

I absolutely detest that argument, as it has absolutely no credibility. Though it does highlight how ignorant people are when it comes to the flu and other viral infections. The argument you made is literally the same as people saying that a z-pack (azithromycin) cures a cold.

I can pretty much guarantee that you did not have the flu. You most likely had another viral infection. It's also possible that on the outside chance it was influenza it lessened the affects of it. I also highly doubt you got swabs taken.

If you want it, take it. If you work in a job that you interact with lots of random people (ie. teacher, nurse, bank teller), then I do think you should if not be forced to have it, at least strongly recommend you taking it, to the point where you need to explicitly refuse it.

But if you're an otherwise fairly healthy 20-something or 30-something, I don't see the point. I only got mine this year since I had a physical in November and was already getting a tetanus booster. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't have gotten it.

Honestly, I really couldn't care all that much about the people that say they don't care, they'll risk it, it's just the flu, I'm normally healthy, etc.

But come on, this goes against all scientific literature on the subject. :( This conversation is so frustrating.

I've never had the shot, but it's not from any well thought-out decision making process. I just don't feel the urgency.
