OT: The News Thread

Racism is likely derived from a built-in biological safeguard to be naturally suspicious of those different than you. But like CH1 said, it's really only truly problematic when it's state-sanctioned.

A costume party on someone's birthday though? Who cares? I'm half-Irish and people "appropriate" my culture and stereotype it every year on March 17th. Doesn't bother me in the least bit.

You need to bring a human rights complaint in that regard and demand your pot of gold.

No, but we "Westerners" have made a Christian event into a National Holiday, excluding all others. Some dumb **** in the Human Rights tribunal could claim that mocks Allah, or Muhammed, or whomever someone who feels slighted wants to claim.

A Brazilian man has accused his wife of trying to kill him by putting poison in her vagina and inviting him to have oral sex with her.

The man - identified only as a 43-year-old from Sao de Jose Rio Preto - realised something was afoot when he noticed a strange odour coming from his wife's private parts, Portuguese news outlet tvi24 said.

Concerned, he took her to hospital, whereupon she confessed to the nefarious plan, Argentinian newspaper La Razon claims.

Tests apparently revealed the woman had placed enough of the unnamed poison in her vagina to kill both her and her husband. She has since received medical treatment, although sources claim her husband plans to sue her for attempted murder.
At first I thought he should have just let her kill herself with the poison, but they'd probably charge him with murder if that happened. Death by Cunnilingus. Only a witch can dream that shit up.

he didnt know about the plan until after she was at the hospital

"Concerned, he took her to hospital, whereupon she confessed to the nefarious plan"

Less than 1% of abortions occur after 20 weeks, and the vast majority of those is because doctors discovered an abnormality or damage to the fetus that would severely effect it's development.

This sounds to me like loony local MP's trying to rally their loony christian base so they can keep a nice firm grip on their seats.

It's not going anywhere. Harper is smart enough to stay miles away from this.

When a small army of road crews left the city’s public works yard, the “hot box” of fresh asphalt in each municipal truck was full and the workers had a list of potholes needing repair.

At the end of the day, the asphalt was gone and workers confirmed their roads had been fixed.

Sixteen of those city work crews, however, were secretly followed by private investigators armed with video cameras and access to GPS tracking devices on the trucks one day in October.

The result of the covert surveillance was unveiled by the city Monday: Almost all those monitored were fired —29 unionized employees, with another two suspended without pay — accused of drawing a day’s pay for, in some cases, just minutes of actual work.

The workers are accused of spending the day in coffee shops, bars, at their homes and running personal errands.
If only we could apply this logic to things like School Boards; Senators and MPPs. Just imagine how much more tax money we could save, or at the very least, finally get the true value of each dollar spent for a change.

He also said he realized something was afoot when he noticed the strange odour from her slit. Could have left her to deal with the odour... and summarily been charged with murder... was the point I was making.

I hope you're right. He's made some silly decisions in the past.

Not with this issue he hasn't. He knows better than to **** with his default dynasty over reproductive rights. This flares up every once in a while because his western MP's need to pander to their rural base now and again to make them feel righteous. Even the wildrose alliance, the party of the Alberta hard right wingers won't touch the issue. Their strongest statement on the matter is that they might delist it so it's not covered by Alberta Health.

If they're not willing to touch the issue with a 10 foot poll because they're concerned the urbanites of Edmonton & Calgary will make sure their hold on power was a short one, there's not a chance Harper is going to spend a second longer on the issue than he has to.

A youth hockey association in North Dakota has halted the sale of tickets for a raffle of 200 guns — including three AR-15 military-style assault rifles — due to “overwhelming” demand.

In a note on its website on Thursday, West Fargo Hockey Association said that people interested in the raffle could join a waiting list in the event that more tickets became available in the future.

“Due to the overwhelming response of this raffle, we are not taking ticket orders at this time until we are able to validate the remaining ticket count,” the group said.

West Fargo Hockey Association board member Mike Prochnow, who is organizing the raffle, told WDAY that he was shocked by the response.

“I knew it was going to blow up, but I didn’t know it was going to blow up to this magnitude,” Prochnow said, adding that it was “unfortunate timing” that caused the raffle to be held so soon after the tragic slaughter of 20 elementary school children in Newtown, Connecticut.

Included in the 200 guns being raffled off are three Rock River AR-15 Coyote rifles, which are similar to the Bushmaster AR-15 used in Newtown.

The association hopes to raise $90,000 by raffling off 4,000 tickets to cover the cost of new ice.

“We just want to get our message out that this is for a youth association, we’re not handing guns out to just people off the street, to people that come in,” Prochnow explained to KVLY. “They have to go through a background check, they have to go through all the hoops that everybody else does.”

“Kids start hunting at young age here with there parents. But we are not handing them out. This is a raffle for the kids.”

Idaho lawmaker: Obamacare is like ‘Jews boarding the trains to concentration camps’

By: David Edwards

A Republican lawmaker in Idaho is defending her comparison of President Barack Obama’s health care reform law to the Holocaust because private insurance companies were like “the Jews boarding the trains to concentration camps” and that the federal governor would eventually “pull the trigger” to destroy them.

In an email sent to supporters and messages posted on Twitter last week, state Sen. Sheryl Nuxoll warned that a health care exchange proposed by Idaho Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter (R) was “replacing capitalism with socialism.”

“The insurance companies are creating their own tombs,” Nuxoll wrote in the letter obtained by The Spokesman-Review. “Much like the Jews boarding the trains to concentration camps, private insurers are used by the feds to put the system in place because the federal government has no way to set up the exchange.”

“Several years from now, the federal government will want nothing to do with private insurance companies,” she warned. “The feds will have a national system of health insurance and they will pull the trigger on the insurance companies.”

On Wednesday, Nuxoll told The Spokesman-Review that she just wanted “people to hear the truth and to be aware that what is being presented before us is a socialistic program… There is no disrespect for any group or people with the analogy.”

“I felt badly for the Jews – it wasn’t just Jews, but Jews, and Christians, and Catholics, and priests,” she said to explain her comparison. “My thing was they didn’t know what was going on. The insurance companies are not realizing what’s going to end up in their demise.”

The Idaho Senate Commerce and Human Resources Committee on Tuesday unanimously approved legislation to create the health insurance exchange.

After Obama was re-elected on last year, Nuxoll suggested in a tweet that Republicans should stage an electoral college boycott to deny him a second term.

Constitutional scholar David Adler told the Idaho Statesmen that the idea that Obama could technically be denied re-election if the 17 states that voted for Mitt Romney boycotted the electoral college was a “really a strange and bizarre fantasy.”

Adler said that the whole idea was bogus because it was “a radical, revolutionary proposal that has no basis in federal law or the architecture of the Constitution.”

To be fair, it's not innacurate that the insurance companies will eventually be killed by an offshoot of the plan they're (very, very reluctantly) helping to set up. It's just the invocation of godwin's law that's stupid. Plus the whole corporate personhood thing, equating the "death" of an industry no one likes and which doesn't have many employees with totally specific skillsets to genocide...

But she's not wrong about what the insurance companies are doing.

Though it initially made "absolute assurances" that all of its burgers were 100% beef, Burger King has been forced to admit that some of its patties may have contained horse meat, after traces of equine DNA were found at one of their processing plants.

The scandal started two weeks ago, when supermarket chains in the UK and Ireland began pulling certain beefburger products off the shelf after test concluded that they contained varying amounts of horse meat.

The tainted product was traced back to three processing plants, one of which — Silvercreft Foods — supplies Burger King restaurants in both the UK and Ireland with some of their patties.
No wonder I never eat there...
