OT: The News Thread

SAN FRANCISCO -- Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, whose company prides itself on benevolent hackathons, has been the target of a hacker.

A Palestinian man posted a message on Zuckerberg's page last week after he said repeated attempts were made to report the security hole on the social-networking site.

"First, sorry for breaking your privacy and post(ing) to your wall, I (had) no other choice to make after all the reports I sent to (the) Facebook team," Khalil Shreateh wrote on Zuckerberg's wall.

Shreateh is a self-described unemployed security researcher. Shreateh posted a series of email exchanges he said were between him and Facebook's security team.

The Palestinian researcher said he discovered a security hole allowing him to post to any members page.
LOL!

One kid with his first car got the ticket undone and won a lawsuit against the cop just for having a dash cam. You can't see the officer, since he's standing by the driver's door, but you can clearly hear his voice threatening to bust the kid's lights to add to his fines, and generally being an overall asswipe with multiple threats. Supposedly, the kid was speeding, and when he denied it, the cop got all high and mighty on him. The audio was played to the Crown, and his ticket was torn up. He then sued, based on the recorded evidence. (this was in the U.S.)

That's part of why I have mine.

It also is because of this:

Exactly.
There's even a cop's dashcam vid where he lets a person go with a warning after stopping them for speeding, but when he gets back in the cruiser, the pissed off driver puts it into reverse and floors it, running right up onto the cop's car.
Now, without that video, it might appear that the cop ran him from behind, and the car ended up on top of his cruiser. The video proves that a) the cop was being generous by letting them off a ticket and b) that the driver was pissed off enough to still do something stupid enough to get arrested.
Hope that cop got a medal.

Some cops are wearing a camera full time on their uniforms as a test project, to see how the general public react when they know they're being recorded.

Yet another case for improved gun control.

That stuff is the least of it right now, Lavabit (secure, encrypted email service) has shut down after receiving a secret court warrant requiring it to basically become an NSA subsidiary by turning over any files the NSA requests, whenever they want them with no additional oversight requested. When the owner just decided to shutter the operation instead, he's being threatened with charges by the same shadow government for obstruction of justice. Lavabit shutting down is leading to other blogs and whatnot that deal in sensitive information like Groklaw to follow suit and shut down.

It's very quickly starting to look like 1984 down there.

Wow. It's not often that I get the urge to smash someone's face until the white meat shows, but by the end of that letter, it was there.

That sort of letter just makes me genuinely curious about who wrote it. What kind of mind writes something like that? How did they come to live in what is apparently a decent neighbourhood? They have reasonably good spelling, and are able to work a computer and printer, but they think this is ok?

might have been my mother in law

"Despite the hateful language used … the content of the letter falls below the threshold for a hate crime," police said in a statement Tuesday. "However, there are other Criminal Code issues that are being considered."

Sure seems like hate mail to me, but I guess they figure they can convince a judge about the threats in the letter.

It's Oshawa, what do you expect?

Its' not hate speech, but you could definitely make the argument that it's criminal harassment, especially if it continues.
It's also not outside the realm of possibilities that the mother wrote it for some perverted reason.

I hate chicken shit letters like that with a passion. In the past, we have had anonymous letters left under our door for various reasons signed "concerned neighbour" or "all of your neighbours" etc for stupid things.

If you are going to write something like that, at least have the stones to say who you are.
