Well...the bridge I considered jumping off of had a line tonight, and I don't like lines, so I came home and after watching a bit more video and looking at his shot a bunch, including some of his shooting numbers....here's my full take.
The shot looks pretty broken, and needs to be rebuilt from scratch but he has some oddly efficient shooting numbers off of the dribble which is fucking inexplicable to me but maybe speaks to a shot form that isn't entirely broken and can be built up. I look at OG's shooting numbers in the NCAA and dude couldn't hit free throws ffs, which is usually a solid indicator of shooting upside. The rest of his offensive game looks encouraging, though I don't know how well it will translate to the NBA. In the NCAA you can get away with being basically 6'6-6'7 and playing an under the rim PF type game around the paint. Without being an explosive athlete (he kind of isn't....he's not a bad athlete, but not an explosive one). He reminds me of a smaller version of Julius Randle, but without the jumper.....which isn't exciting.
Defensively, I guess I get it. He's basically the definition of a switchable team defender. Though playing the 4 for SC all year, he didn't guard the perimeter a lot except in rotations so I can't say that I love the idea of him being a project there as well. He looks quick enough to do it, but still needs to learn to do it against NBA wings.
So if I squint, I see a world where he's rebuilt his jumper into something he can at least stand in the corner with and he's a good enough finisher around the rim/paint to do some P/R and cuts. But I don't see an offensive ceiling of note here unless he becomes a better floor stretcher than I think he can be. Defensively, he's going to be a NBA role player at minimum. But I don't know if I see a lockdown defender there rather than a really good team defender. I guess I just don't see the ceiling on this guy anywhere. It's all very boring but somehow at the same time doesn't strike me as super playable now. Also not particularly young for the draft class compared to some other guys.
Best case scenario? Draymond without the playmaking?
