OT: The Official Toronto Raptors Thread

I really don't think so.

Mobley is a pure complementary player on both ends.

He can't be a prime ballhandler or initiator on offense, and has never been more than a 3rd option (max).

He can't defend good bigs one on one in the paint, and can't defend good guards one on one on the perimeter. He's just an elite help defender that's benefitted hugely from having a legit post defender like Allen behind him - iirc his defensive metrics take a big dive whenever Allen is off the court and imo it's probably Allen's bum knee and his limited resulting play that's made mobley look 'worse' this year.

really crazy that the Pistons can't get anything going this series. sure orlando might be a bit better than the regular season standings say, but detroit was so, so good all year.
casual fans who have not watched more regular season basketball this year, might wonder themselves how Detroit managed to win 60 games this year? Are they truly not as good as the record suggestion, or is Orlando really better than a typical 8th seed, or is Orlando just a nightmare matchup for the Pistons?

IMO, I feel like it's a symptom of both.

After the moves they made during the Summer/off-season, signing Desmond Bane, etc, The Orlando Magic before the season began, many sports analysts (especially on ESPN) picked them to make it to the top of the Eastern Conference and had them as a top-3 seed in the East, but obviously, the season didn't play out that way. The Magic, who many expected to be a strong team in the East, came out sluggish out of the Gates and they were frustrating to Watch and inconsistent all season. Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner both missed a lot of games because of longterm injuries and had to take time to recover from them.

I think the pistons , while still a good but flawed team , might've overachieved a bit.

They started the season hot during October, November, and December, when the rest of the Eastern Conference was still figuring itself out. New York was supposed to be THE team to beat, but then Detroit, Boston, and a few others outperformed the Knicks because of their slow start.

The Pistons weren't supposed to be here in the sense of being the number 1 seed, winning 60 games, etc., at best they were projected to be a 45+ win team and maybe a 5-7 seed. The Magic are better than what their record suggests, but they went through a lot of injuries, ups and downs throughout the season.

Cade played at a legit All-NBA level and their role players bought in and played hard as shyt for all 82 games

It’s not the first time we’ve seen the star guard + defensive role players build regress in the playoffs. A lot of people called it but admittedly I thought they would at least get past the 1st round

Orlando had been up and down all season, but their last 5 games (play-in vs. Charlotte + these four playoff games against detroit) might be the best 5 game stretch they’ve had all year. They just flipped the switch and are peaking at the right time.

Basically a team that overachieved in the regular season matched up with a team that underachieved, and the team that underachieved is finally playing like people thought they would.

The problems for Detroit are pretty simple:

1.) By far the biggest issue is Duren turning into a pumpkin. It's tough to compensate for your 20/10 center turning into Chris Mihm.

2.) The shooting. We knew they were limited from the perimeter but they just need one guy to start knocking down some threes. Harris is getting a lot of wide open looks and can't hit anything. JB has to dust off Levert and Huerter in game five.

I give Cade's turnovers grace because he rushed back from a collapsed lung + the lack of shooters around him , but Duren disappearing is inexcusable. I never expected much frim
Tobias Harris anyway , he is a limited player- it is What it is. He is not a player who moves the needle at all. In Philly he never had a genuine impact on the team . Just Cant believe the sixers management/ownership back then chose him over Jimmy butler.

Detroit won 60 games this year but Are not truly not as good as their seeding and record indicates. They are not ready for championship contention yet, they need to find an big/PF upgrade on duren or they wait and Hope until he reaches the next level in the playoffs sooner than later. They are also missing wingers/3 and D players who can defend the perimeter against opposing wings and shoot efficiently from the corner/ perimeter.

and Orlando is much better than the typical play-in/8th seed team. Styles make fights: Orlando is a a similar team to the Pistons but they are more unpredictable, physical, rogue, aggressive, dynamic, Disruptive, defensive oriented team than Détroit, and with many players who can be inconsistent offensively and lack offensive executive/chemistry as a collective unit sometimes but on a individual level, their players can still handle the Ball, create their own offense and can shoot extremely well if they get hot at the same Time .Detroit had no shotmaking/offensive creators outside of Cade. Duren, Harris have been disappointments

Again, Pistons just a good but flawed team built for the regular season and Orlando is a physical/unpredictable/inconsistent version of them but with way more shot creators. The pistons depend way too much on Cade. Brandon Ingram on the Raptors is bad right now don't get me wrong but they have no one on their team that commands same gravity as Ingram on ball or offball. But Duren has been so horrible in this series against the Magic.

I expected Pistons to win in 6 games cause I thought their defense and rebounding/forcing turnovers would hold up. But Orlando is outplaying them on the boards and forcing them into more turnovers. weird but happens. They need to get a player like kawhi if they lose.

Detroit was a better playoff team against the knicks last year mostly due to Malik “Uncut Gems” Beasley. Duncan Robinson ain’t filling those shoes right now lol.

Their entire regular season was built on bullying and out hustling teams every night. Offensively they were never that great. They consistently stuck to the program/ gameplan for the entire Regular season, and dutifully played within their strengths inside the familiar confines of their team system but they couldnt adjust to the intensity, unpredictability and new challenges of the playoffs.

They have no legit second option after Cade and the latter is turning the ball over like James Harden against a good team in the playoffs. Ausar didn’t take any leaps. Duren is limited. Tobias is Tobias.

They should’ve went after a player like MPJ at the deadline. The Pistons FO deserves to get embarrassed. They knew they needed a secondary scorer and some more ball handling for months and did nothing. Now they ran into a bad matchup and are on the brink of elimination. It's not even like the Magic are playing all that well - they're shooting 39% from the field this series and are up 3-1.

I don't think Bickerstaff should be fired, the main flaw is the roster construction. He should get another year. Tobias Harris being your second best player in the playoffs is a huge problem.

OKC/LAL second round series will be so fun to Watch if both reaves/doncic come back healthy, fully recovered from their injuries and are able to play without much physical limitations or pain. Lakers offense vs thunder suffocating defense
