OT: World Politics

The EU would specifically require the overturning of this law before they would consider Ukraine to join. Wtf are they doing?

It’s weird.

Telegram, Ukie Reddit, Ukie Bluesky/Twitter all seem pretty unified on this being a really bad thing and I'm having a hard time seeing the hole in their argument. Even if there was a problem with NABU, it's a requirement over Brussels' for eventual admittance into the EU, you don't scrap it or defang it, you fix it. This is a scary sign of the corrupt Ukie elite getting slid back in the direction of Moscow. If this persists, there will be huge protests, riots and very likely desertions from the front lines.

Do we know Zelensky’s position on the bill?

So, one of the better "bad" takes that I've read suggested that the big difference between being indepedent and being under the direction of the office of the Prosecutor General is that it removes NABU & SAPO's ability to independently dig after corruption in weapons procurement for the war. The rest of their work appears to be most unaffected, the Prosecutor General has a pretty good track record of their own anti corruption investigations, as well as joint investigations with the two independent agencies (they took down a supreme court judge together in 2023).

So this is still ugly and depends on how much latitude you want to give Zelensky. The SSU has grabbed two high ranking guys at the anti corruption agencies for being Russian agents and Zelensky appears to be advancing that as the reasoning for why this is being done. Zelensky's administration has been better than the typical ukrainian government at rooting out and punishing corruption, so probably deserves some benefit of the doubt, but part of that success can be attributed to the agencies he just removed the independence of....so yeah, ffs.

Trump announced a trade deal with Japan — their market is up 3%. US markets quiet.

They know what the Japanese markets don't know. Deal doesn't mean anything at all. It's a prop Trump gets to use today and if it bothers him tomorrow it will be called the worst deal ever and ignored.
