P.K. Subban

Re: Subban...

Remember you can't compare the real world with the NHL

Not in terms of the money but the principle of having to earn your salary is the same.

Anyhow . . . Meehan is going to lose this one . . . finally. There's little pressure on Bergevin to make the playoffs this season. He can wait P.K. out. And I think he will.

Re: Subban...

You mean the same crew that gave us the Worst Day in Habs history when the Kostitsyns and Hamrlik were going to be arrested at the airport? PK faces a ton of hurdles because of his race. He's confident and black and that scares the shit out of the NHL and the players. Montreal fans are so insecure that they take the first hint of criticism of a player like Subban to heart and start to embrace this twisted logic. Ohhh PK's a bad guy with no respect says Mike Richards of the Philly Flyers and everyone ****ing jumps on the kid. I bet there are 100 other players that are bigger *******s in the NHL than PK, but since he's a Hab and we've been conditioned to accept the fact that our team is shit, fans gladly parrot the views of the mental midgets and bigots of the Mainstream media.

I love PK but what if he's indeed a giant disrespectful asswipe in the room and on the ice? Personally, I don't care but it's gotten to the point that all criticism levelled at PK is met with suspicion of racism.

I have no doubt PK faces a ton of hurdles because of his race and I was one of the first ones here to suggest that race played a role in Richard's comments.

However, being the victim of racism (or any other injustice) does not automatically make you a good guy. Victims can be still dicks.

Re: Subban...

I agree with your post CH....

And furthermore, society is at a point where every time someone criticizes a black person, then the word racism is quickly thrown out there....

As Lapin would say: don't be so loose mate....

Re: Subban...

I don't know... Watch him on tv (interviews or as a commentator) and with other players and he seems like a pretty good guy who people genuinely like.

Criticism is fine, it's the unwarranted criticism that raises eyebrows.

Re: Subban...

The guys on the team clearly hate him.

Clearly... they hate him.

Re: Subban...

Subban and his agent seem to be looking for one of those pre-lockout deals, big term(years), big money. We are in a post-lockout world, where these deals won't happen unless said team is absolutely sure about the player they are trying to sign. The Habs seem to be hedging their bets with Subban, they like him, sure; but are unwilling to commit long term (years/money) until they see more out of him/how he continues to develop. The Habs are not being cheap but cautious, they have shown in the past that they are will to commit long term, big money on a player they feel comfortable with (ie:price). The situation may turn sour if Subban takes personally that fact that the Habs seem unwilling to sign him long term. Right now, I say its about 60/40 that this will end in a trade.

Re: Subban...

The point of RFA contracts is that they should give teams some stability in spending their money before a player earns UFA status. If you start opening the bank during the RFA status then you likely just screw your team and setting a bar throughout the league that never goes backwards unless you have another lockout.

I think that Karlsson deal in Ottawa is messing with the Habs here.

Re: Subban...

It's more than just on-ice production when it comes to PK. Listening to Meehan it sure seems that PK's OVERALL package is a part of what kind of ticket he gets. I believe he wants long term and close to $5M per.

Re: Subban...

PK is probably the real deal, but I think everyone should realize that he will always be a bit of a cancer in the dressing room due to his style, personality, ego and love of the limelight. No getting away from that.

Re: Subban...

MB should make one final offer. That's it. If he and his agent don't like, PK can go back to sportsnet. Enjoy the rest of the year off without a paycheque from the Habs.

Enjoy the winter/spring off watching all your peers play hockey.

They can revisit his contract in the summer.

Re: Subban...

I'm sure the league is closely following the PK negotiations.

If he gets lots of money and lots of years, this will in fact set a new standard. Players in his position (second contract) don't often get big deals, I mean this is not Stamkos/Doughty, this is PK. I'm not sure the league wants the Habs/Molson to set the bar so high so early into the new CBA...

Price and Gorges were asked this summer while in Kelowna about PK, and both said he was a great team mate and lots of fun. The kid wants to win, I don't think he is a cancer in the dressing room.

Baseball players contracts were very carefully scrutinized by the MLBPA during Fehr's reign, and would be shocked is the same "code" wasn't applied to the NHLPA.

As Sal likes to remind us, what you think is irrelevant.

I think that you'll agree that with players like PK, there will always be some added friction in the dressing room because their need for the spotlight will rub others in the wrong way at times.

what you don't know is that hockey players in general love to play pranks and joke around in the dressing room with each other. Our GM was a big practical joker during his playing time. Every team has those players, it keeps the dressing room fun and that is good.
