Play-in Round: Toronto Maple Leafs (8) vs Columbus Blue Jackets (9)

I mean at some point they need to be a tough opponent. They really only brought their A game for half the series (Game 2, Game 5, 1/2 of Game 3, and 10 minutes of Game 4.

They played 1 complete game, game 2.

For a team that by all rights should be desperate to prove itself, that is a pathetic, pathetic effort.

Free agents walking and replaced.

Maybe one B level swap of our young 3rd liners for a good top 4 dman.

Yeah, I mean I think you are underselling the first part as it includes our #2 and #4 dman in ice time this year. Those are two big pieces to add. And because of that the second part is necessary, whether it is for the dman or to create cap space to add the dman.

Not sure they will do anything with Freddy, but replacing him with a platoon goalie situation could free up some needed cap space.

There is some heavy lifting to do. They aren't moving any of the big 4 though.

Those were probably our two weakest regulars all year. It’s immaterial that they played as much as they did. Inserting players who simply won’t drag us down would be an improvement. Inserting good players would be icing.

I mean typically good teams have good top 4 dmen though. That should be the goal. We’re trying to win a cup here.

Just replacing them with something better is what got us excited about Ceci/Barrie in the first place.

I don’t think the see Dermott/Holl as the answers.

I agree. I’m just saying their departure doesn’t create any hole. You can run with just about anyone and get similar results. But we need to make strong additions to those spots, that’s why I’ve been advocating for Pietrangelo all year.

Funny how obvious it has become that Anderson can't seem to carry the load for this team on the playoffs.

It has also been obvious that the team defence has been lacking.

The forward group (highly talented) continually struggle in games where in a winner takes all scenario is presented.

Dubas ....
I love his new ideas for the game and how it should be analyzed.... But he has to make changes to his ideas on how this team should play.
But I do believe the clock has started on his ability to lead this team to the promised land.

Kappy plays like someone who is pouting because he thinks he should be on the top two lines. Sometimes he is amazing out there, his speed and hustle make him a dangerous player.

But most of the time he plays stupid.

I agree with another posters comment that he doesn't seem to have it between the ears.

He should be gone.

Johnsson can be a real disruptive force out there, but again, he plays like he is just learning the game sometimes.

He should be gone. I am concerned about his ability to stay healthy and his overall play.
He should be part of a package to bring in a 2/3 damn.

Kerfoot started finding his way later in the season .... And I would be more inclined to maybe keep him, only because he does play center and he does play an important position for this team.
Unless it is for a good return (which I believe he would fetch).... Give him another season to get it together.

Dermott .... Gone. No question. Let him find his game somewhere else.
He can be part of a package for that dman I alluded to earlier.

Marincin .... Gone or sent to the Marlies forever. Actually there is the dman you can expose for the Seattle draft.

Muzzin ..... Love his macoun like play. He has a penchant for throwing bombs out there, but solid as a #3 and passable as a #2 defender.

Reilly ..... This management and the past management have seriously left this kid out to fend for himself.
Some of the partners he has had to endure, has been criminal.

Personally, I would resign him and leave him on the first pp unit, unless they bring in an offensive juggernaut.

Holl is an excellent 3rd pairing dman. Nothing more .... I don't care what your stats say Zeke, he is not a top pairing dman or even a really good 2nd pairing.

Tavares is as advertised. Keeper.

Matthews is the driving force of this team, any thought of getting rid of him is rediculous.

Now Marner and willy .... Marner is the better player .... His contact is a bit over paid in terms of today's metrics for players of that nature.
Willy has alot of talent and a good contract.

Willy I would say has more trade value because of the contract and the possibilities of his play really elevating.

But what the leafs would have to give up to secure a bonafide one or two dman in this league would cost more than willy alone .... And I am not sure it would be worth it.

Marners contract will be hard to move to get return value for the dollar. And I also think that the dislike for his father's actions have made it very tough for the kid .... Dad should shut his mouth, that is what agents and lawyers are for.

I would try to keep them both.

Soup ..... Sign him. Even though I think the return he might get in a trade might surprise many of us, keep him and I believe he will flourish.

Robertson isn't ready, not even close. But the kid is too good for juniors, and he can't go to the Marlies.
Some here talk about him being on the first two lines .... If this is a team ready to make the next rung up the ladder, he isn't on the top 2 lines ....

Samson and Lilly .... One of these two will be trade fodder if the leafs are intent on strengthening the defensive core.

Lilly seems to have regressed and sandin hasn't really stepped forward yet.

Both seem to have an amazing future, but to get something you have to give up something.

All the rest are disposable parts .... They can be replaced by external pieces who will play for cents in this new financial environment.

Someone mentioned that all these players can be replaced internally .... I don't think so.

The leafs haven't got the farm system they had a few years ago .... And with Dubas trading away firsts the past few seasons .... It won't get any better.

The goaltending is the difficult replacement.

The leafs spent many years looking for a half decent goalie ... And Anderson has played well for the leafs in the total picture ... But he has repeatedly let the team down in important games.

Bad goals take the wind out of the team and he has a penchant for letting in some doozzies.

I think the leafs are stuck with him unless a team that is structured as a defence first team gets him, where I am certain he would shine.

Dubas has had an amazing ability to draft gems at the lower draft selections ..... But his ability to build a winning playoff team so far have fallen short.

From my perspective, it seems that this management team has gone with the thought of "let's just make it and anything can happen".

Dubas seems to have fallen in love with his employees and isn't looking at the big picture.

He isn't there to be there friend, he is there to build a team that has a serious chance at winning the cup.

For me .... The clock is ticking on Dubas.

Btw .... Ceci, Barrie ..... Both are fired out of a cannon, hopefully to a divisional opponent where the leaf forwards can feast on their inadequacies lol.

Keefe .... A keeper.
Anyone who thinks he was the problem of the past series needs to give their heads a shake.
He is learning and the guy hated to lose ...
I believe that Keefe will be very successful in this league.

It is going to be an interesting off season.

If Dubas sticks to his guns and comes back with most of the same players .... They had better find some success in the playoffs or he might be finding himself in charge of a scouting department.

Jmho.

I wouldn’t go into next season with

Rielly-Dermott
Muzzin-Holl
Sandin-Lilly

think they have to make an impactful addition there.
Yep. They need to add someone who is very reliable defensively (chance suppression, entry prevention, boxing out, etc.) on the right side that fits with Rielly.

kappy would be the savvy nerd move - the guy who looks best with the eye test but who the numbers think is quite bad. Prime opportunity to take advantage of a discrepancy in evaluation.

And if dermott can't be a top 4 guy right now, then given his contract and given the expansion draft he would be a guy to move as well.

Kappy + Dermott for a Manson type might be the kind of move that makes sense.
