Something we haven’t seen in Raleigh in 20 years.

The team has remained remarkably healthy during the playoffs, Ehlers missed a game against Ottawa, Nikishin missed 2 against Philly. Everyone else has played all 13 games. No changes at practice yesterday either.

Vegas brings the top playoff goal scorers, with Pavel Dorofeyev and Brett Howden tied at 10. All of Howden’s goals are at even strength. Jack Eichel and Mitch Marner are the top 2 in assists. Carter Hart is right behind Andersen in Save %. They convert 23.9% of their PP chances.

Watch parties on the South Plaza and Moore Square. People attending the South Plaza watch party can park in the arena lots if they want to pay, so plan accordingly, the lots may fill up faster than earlier games

ABC for TV. Mike and Tripp on radio, Forslund on the national radio call.

Go Canes!
Keep your legs moving
Play the game you know
Take away time and space
No stupid penalties
Patience

Remember: VGK played Utah, Anaheim and an injured COL team with meh goaltending to get here.

Remember … chances are VERY good that the good folks at the Lenovo Center will unveil some sort of new way to access the parking lots tonight. Even if you’re not a tailgater it’s probably best to be early.

Game 1 notes …

For Carolina the plan is remarkably the same even though the style and strengths of the opponent are different. Turn ‘em over with pressure, value possession, create a mess in front of the net, throw pucks at said mess. Vegas doesn’t really mind if you possess the puck, so maybe make them regret that posture. The way you beat a trap/zone team hasn’t changed in decades. Make ‘em move. This Carolina team is good at that.

For Vegas, when they get possession, they look for the long stretch passes some, but mostly they’ll look to stretch the coverage in the offensive zone. They haven’t played a full time man to man defense, but both Anaheim and Colorado play hybrid systems. The thing is, they haven’t played a man system that plays with anything like Carolina's aggression. I’m not sure this is a matchup game for the Canes at all, but Vegas will definitely want to get Marner away from Slavin and Miller when possible. So that kind of stuff is worth watching.

So true.....I hope a 5:15 pm arrival for tailgating will eliminate that particular frustration.

They already messed around with the egress. During the Regular season, the East 2000 and 3000 lots emptied onto Wade, the 1000 lot went up Westchase. For the Playoffs, the 2000 and general 1000 lots exited onto Wade, I think Premier and VIP were the only lots out Westchase.

But it’s the playoffs. It just means more … reason to screw things up

A couple of matchup things to watch for the Canes …

It’ll be interesting to see how the Canes attack Vegas’ defense pairings. A lot is made of Vegas’ zone defense and their forwards DO take a lot of pressure off of their D. But, that third pairing is either going to have to deal with Ehlers and the Dads or with Stankoven’s white hot group. And while they were really good against Colorado’s cobbled together depth, this ain’t the same thing. Coughlin and Korczak both move really well, but they’re fixing to get put under stress in a wildly different way that they’ve seen in the playoffs. And honestly, so are Hanifin and Andersson on the second pairing. Both are mobile puck-carriers who make a sharp first pass, but both are also capable of being rattled in the corners. Carolina’s going to be making a lot of cross corner dump-ins to break the trap, so those guys are going to be retrieving under pressure all game. That’s going to be something to watch to get a hint of how the systems are holding up.

I don't know if either team will be able to fully play their ideal system in the 1st two periods, at least. Maybe all game. It will be a bit sloppy maybe, and require some "feeling out", and probably some luck, or a couple of big mistakes.

I expect this first game to be tight, with each team feeling some pressure and trying to feel out each other. That may last for a period or most of the game.

McCauley and Rooney
With Devin Berg and Matt MacPherson on the lines. Somehow, Garrett Rank made the finals, he’s the backup referee, so we’ll see him Thursday with a partner TBD. Trent Knorr is the backup linesman. The series supervisor is Kris King. As a player, King accumulated 2,030 PIM in 849 NHL games.

Rank making the Finals is an example of everything wrong with the officiating and the decision makers that critique this stuff. Rooney and McCauley are fine, Rank should have been nowhere near an ECF series let alone the Finals.
