Please Vote on proposed rule change

Should team owners that were never granted a dispersal draft be allowed a one-time courtesy.

  • Yes. It’s understood that this applies to bottom 3 teams only.

Not playing around anymore.
There has been a lot of discussion about dispersal drafts the last couple of days.

A little history for the new guys. Please correct something if incorrect.

I joined a few years ago when the season was about to start and someone bailed. Ray asked if I would so I did.

Then more dropped out and a dispersal draft was done. This turned out to be a nightmare for the commissioners because seasoned vets that already knew the league got a redo and one of them won the league, the same douche now abandoned his team. So imo, one bad apple spoiled the lot. The baby was thrown out with the bath water.

Now I get not wanting to go through that again however that decision was made unilaterally at the top. In my mind it is not the job of the commissioner to make these sort of rules decisions without a vote. If a commissioner doesn’t want consensus then he shouldn’t be commissioner.

Ray stepped down over this shit and it didn’t come from me when he did and that tells me this is an ongoing issue.

You don’t want to give everyone the same chance? Fine. Just be fair about it.

Ultimately I would not use the option. If you look at my team I’ve amassed a lot of young talent that will start paying dividends soon enough. This is for future owners. If someone comes in to take a single team to help the league, they must be given a one time courtesy like everyone else.

So even if it’s only one single opening, then an existing owner would be able to abandon his current team, pick the new team, and hypothetically it could be a dispersal between his previous team and the single open team he just took over plus the new owner?

No

What I’m saying is this

If a guy comes in and is the only new owner at the time and is forced into keeping someone else’s trash, like I was (that was not a good team) then that owner should have the right to enter the next dispersal draft if there ever is one.

One time only. It makes it fair for everyone.

If the owner declines entry at the next dispersal draft then his chip is gone. Used up.

A simple and elegant solution to even out the entry teams.

Furthermore, the owner should only get the courtesy if he is bottom three.

For example I would waive my right to enter and therefore can’t bring it up again.

The whole point is to show you’re trying to be fair to everyone.

To be clear. I stepped down as commish from all my leagues because it literally drained the fun from fantasy sports for me. I was constantly having to deal with drama.

As commish you're always concerned about what's best for the league... 12 months a year. Then you're constantly challenged by people who, on a whim, see a perceived problem and they won't take your word for it that you've considered (or even tried) other options and you're doing the best you can with said problem.

And on the flip side, when I see what I think is a major issue in leagues... I've very often made a big stink about it. So I fully understand both sides of this issue.

I have a long history of being known as a whiner in fantasy leagues. I've tried to back off over the past couple year.

We should all start a commissioner service. Fee based for leagues. Whenever there’s a job so distasteful it’s just wrong to not make money off it.

Leagues like this shouldn’t have a player commissioner. Too much to do. Too many people to please.

That's really a great idea. I'm not sure if there's a way to actually make money at it... but I'd certainly pay an extra $5 a year for a "professional" commish.

There’s ways to make money on it. I’m going to look into this.

Would be an add on to a site like fantrax where they have people managing 1000s of leagues.

Submit questions or concerns, build up options then post for voting. Could be managed if the platform was decent

Brilliant.

It would have to incorporate the league itself.

That's tougher sledding

Yeah it's a fascinating site. Lots of garbage but also a lot of great services, usually have to end up paying more than $5 but definitely good stuff on there.

I'm late to this whole party (takes time to get enough interest to read through 12 pages of rule argument threads a week into the off-season!), but I don't think the dispersal rules are a problem right now.

You've all already made the point about the advantage experienced owners have over newbies in that situation.

My bigger issue with allowing existing owners to participate would be that it would (theoretically) really benefit the guys right at the top. What stops an owner from selling off picks and prospects and his whole future to try to win now, if he knows he can likely avoid a lot of long term suffering in the future by jump starting a rebuild in a dispersal draft within a few seasons?

On the whole "manager retention vs. finding new guys" part...that's personal preference if you ask me. For example, a guy like Thunder was a great asset to the league. I found him polite, friendly, easy to negotiate with, and always responsive. So it would be fantastic if he'd stay in the league for a long, long time. Really, it'd be ideal if most of us did this.

However, at the same time, he was in win-now mode for my tenure here, and while he might have left for life reasons, that's sure easier to do when your team is aging out and the bill is coming due for all those trades. As a competitor, I wouldn't want to see a team like that win, then bottom out (or bottom 3 out or whatever) and get to hit the reset button. Kinda takes the "dynasty" out of dynasty, you know?

It's a tough call but I think I'd rather see a new guy come in and get a chance to start fresh in that situation.
