RIP Capgeek

Montana

Champion
"Effective immediately, Jan. 3, 2015, CapGeek.com has permanently ceased operations. This sudden decision is made with a heavy heart and is due to the personal health of CapGeek.com founder and director Matthew Wuest. While this decision may raise many questions, it is requested that you respect Matthew's privacy and wish for no media or purchase inquiries. Thank you for your co-operation and understanding at this difficult time."

bummer

Kinda weird how it says "permanently ceased operations" while simultaneously requesting "no purchase inquiries"......that seems odd.

If you can't run it anymore, no prob.....but why not sell it, so it can continue on? You'd think there would be a market for it.

Yeah, Mindz and I were discussing that. Seemed weird and/or shady.

It was just over 24000th in web traffic in the US according to Alexa. Which means it was probably the 1000th most popular non porn website....had to be worth at least a bit of coin. Something definitely doesn't seem right here.

It's often hard for a founder to let go of his/her "baby". My guess is that he hopes to recover from the illness and comes back to run the site.

The only person/people who could re-create a site like that would have to be the NHL, assuming they would be willing to do that.

Capgeek definitely has sources within the NHL as it has broken news of contract extensions. Plus, they always have the right information for every new deal in no time.

As for why they won't sell it, who knows? I don't know how the inner workings of websites go, but maybe there's information in the site that would expose his sources?

Anyway, it's a huge loss. It was my favorite hockey related website.

Very strange and sudden? Also the contact email for the site was [email protected], yet the message on the website directs you to send an email to capgeek.inc at gmail.com. That actually will come up as "capgeek.inc at gmail.com" in your email, which looks fishy to me.

I'm hoping that Matthew is really ok and somehow got hacked or something else is going on. If not, I hope he returns to health soon. This news has already spread like wildfire across message boards and media outlets if Matthew had any doubts of how valuable capgeek.com is to everyone.

How much to recreate a site like that?

I would say the best possible route if you wanted to keep it cheap would be a wiki-like site that the users could update. You run the risk of people entering incorrect information, but the same problem exists with wikipedia, and most wiki articles are pretty accurate. If it became a problem, then you could start an ever-growing list of trusted users, and only they could make updates.

Lawyers of forumice, would there be potential legal issues if numbers were posted incorrectly? Any other legal issues behind this?

Would make sense for the league to have/run a site like this to keep track of the players.

Would make even more sense for the NHLPA/Player Agents to start their own site with fantasy-friendly free site, and a paid site for teams including all of the clauses.

Would also love if hockey-reference/capgeek merged.

capdork and capweenie are still avaiable, as are capdope and capfool (but not capass).
