Sheldon Keefe Watch…

I don’t know if Trotz is the answer but he sure as shit wasn’t the problem on the Island. He got more juice out of those lemons than Country Time

I think a myth about the leafs is they play a skill system. Imo they have a lot of skilled players doing whatever this is

Plenty. Caps fans whined about it constantly. But my favorite is how long he played Brooks Orpik as a top pair d ahead of younger dudes like Schmidt. I recall he held onto alzner for too long too.

well, schmidt was head of Alzner and Orpik when he was left exposed in the expansion draft (Carlson, Niskanen, Orlov protected).

Ah yes it was alzner that got hurt in the series vs the leafs. He was playing toughs and got wrecked if I remember right. Then Schmidt went in because of the injury and things improved drastically. I remember being devastated when alzner got hurt. Trotz was actively helping the leafs by leaving him out there to crash and burn. It was great. It was probably the worst coaches series by an opposition in this eras leafs. They weren't ready to push through it at the time but they came closer than they should have.

I think there's some merit to calling it a skill based system, but only some and it's where some of our personnel warts shine through imo. I think we give too much freedom to some of our defenders to make plays down the flanks, put too much emphasis on perimeter puck control (including the 3rd forward coming high to receive the puck), and pass up a lot of shot opportunities when we have net front presence/traffic. I think that desired style of play is what causes us to continually value guys like Kerfoot & Yarnkrok instead of preferring for a mix of styles in the bottom 6 (note how effective Kampf tends to be in those grindy as fuck type games) because of their puck skills around the outside.

The myth about the Leafs is that this has anything to do with coaching. They light it up during the season every year and they implode in the first round every year and it doesn't matter who's coaching them. This isn't a coaching issue, it's a "your team is a fraud" issue. It's also a function of willful ignorance on an institutional scale. When Keefe calls out his star players for underperformance one night, then has to basically retract that statement the following day because some entitled players didn't like his tone, that is a sign of a team that doesn't want to hear any unpleasant truths about themselves and a weak front office that's only too willing to indulge them. Keefe, like Paul Maurice, like Ron Wilson, like Randy Carlyle, like Mike Babcock, will wind up being the scapegoat and absolutely nothing will change because the issue isn't the coach, it's "the core".

Unless or until the front office shows the courage needed to fuck with the core and send a message to the rest of the team, nothing is going to change. The enemy here is complacency. How many do-over's are they going to get before reality can no longer be ignored?

If this does happen I suspect they promote within and look at a full time replacement in the off-season

still not sure this is the answer but change is change

that's how much pull auston matthews has. at 10 years old, he was already getting nhl coaches like paul maurice fired from the leafs.

that's power baby.
Before him it was Sundin (although Sundin could at least win a couple of playoff rounds) The point is that coaching isn't the issue and firing the coach won't get the attention of the players. Unless or until the front office is prepared to make the players feel some of the pain, especially those core players who are never held to account for their lack of compete, nothing is going to change except the name of the head coach.

Someone in that front office requested or directly ordered Keefe to publicly walk back his statement after he criticized his core players. That was a huge tell as to the malaise currently running rampant at MLSE. And quite frankly, Keefe lost whatever amount of authority he ever had as soon as he did that. He should have simply resigned the minute he was asked to take back his comments but I guess if he waits to be fired he gets to keep the money. But that was the moment he was officially on the clock as a head coach. Management cut his balls off in public. Is it any wonder why the players now largely ignore him?
