Tech Thread

Skynet being a shit LLM might explain why humans were able to beat it....after the nuclear apocalypse it committed....

There is no way that AI would "write" in that tone without serious influence. AI does not have "feelings", or "opinions". That tweet was written by an actual racist.

an LLM will write whatever it predicts the next statements should be, based entirely off of the training data it has been given access to.

Restrict it's training data to stormfront, patriots.win, and conversations over dinner at the Preston household and the AI model is going to be a nazi.

Nice.

And in Ontario, we're halfway through a 30 year project to get rid of diesel commuter trains! So I guess it's just us and the Chinese on the cutting edge of innovation.

Usually love future tech....but this is probably decades or forever away unless China has figured out to construct them for functional price. It requires an entirely new set of infrastructure, only really makes sense for certain routes and more or less requires you to ignore stops between major destinations or else you start losing the benefits of the extra speed.

Awesome results though and hopefully this can develop into something that can challenge air travel over dedicated medium distance routes.

That's why democracy doesn't work.

Have this in place for a generation from now.

There's definitely an aspect of world building that a one party dictatorship unlocks that seems impossible in a short term rotating democracy. It'd nice if there was a sort of independent "major projects' type branch that can take on bigger "greater good" type goals. Sort of like the central banks. Something more technocratic. Our population would have to be conditioned, like the Chinese, to accept it and that'll never happen.

I'm not sure if it will ever be economic though. We're probably closer to light enough batteries to make airliners electric than we are to make maglev economic. It's the cost of the tracks, not the trains. The only existing maglev line in the world cost about 65M USD (2025 dollars) per km in China to build, so triple that here, easily. Just to match the time it takes on a short haul flight from Toronto island.

There's definitely an upside there, but the downside is that the government needs to actually be right. There's a lot of centrally planned white elephants out there built with public funds.

The right tool for the right job.

Short distance: Light rail and buses
Medium distance: High speed regional rail
Long distance: Air travel

Yes agree. Wasn't taking about the train specifically. Just the way China has grown solar energy for example. It's the right thing to do, it's cheap and amazing, but it is at times very hard to sell politically... just have to do it anyway. We hold ourselves back for dumb reasons. But yes democracy can serve as a very effective sanity check for bad ideas and elephants.
