Tech Thread

it's already getting tough to wade past the AI slop on youtube.

I keep seeing them in the recommended shorts.

I have a pretty firm rule now, if I click a channel that I don't subscribe to and it is one of the b-roll footage with voiceover channels, it gets immediately put on my "don't recommend" list. I just assume that it's pure AI created now. There's actually a bit of an epidemic on there with AI channels copying successful voice over channel styles in a bunch of niches and flooding out the creator with AI copycat content.

I don't quite get the benefit from Google's standpoint though, I don't think a lot of this AI content passes the "uncanny valley" test and human viewers will tire of it very quickly and their youtube watch time will decrease as a result.

It sometimes feels like they enshittify for the sake of enshittifying.

I want to get an external SSD.. all the technology and materials used are basically exactly the same for all companies?

Sort of, but not really. Stick to a legit manufacturer though and within your price range they're all going to have more or less similar specs, capabilities, capacity. Samsung, Western Digital, Seagate, Crucial all really good.

Picking the right drive for your use case is more important than which manufacturer though.

Perfect.
There is a Seagate on Amazon, 2 TB for $110.
Just want for pure backup storage.

Am i to assume that transfer speed is where the quality difference are?

So we've gone from the "animated gif and midi music" shitty internet to the "AI animated and AI voiced" shitty internet. Was there ever really a sweet spot in there, other than Forum Ice?

Yeah, transfer speed (and how long it can maintain that speed when transferring large files) is the big one. But also how many times the disk can be written over before it starts to go wonky, how much or little the drive is impacted by being close to it's storage capacity.

If you're using it as a place to stick a bunch of movies and watch them off of it, you're fine with a budget drive from a good manufacturer.

Not really. If we've learned anything over the last bunch of years it's that our internet overlords started enshittifying the place 20 yrs ago, it just took a while for them to get it to where it is.

Yep, same shit just exponentially faster and now on a handheld device. Soon to be beamed directly into your brain.
