Those Francis Crick talks he references are wonderful. Why can't smart people run the world.
I actually watched that vid a second time last night (enjoy listening to Brian Cox - super smart and engaging speaker) and noticed that he mentioned the Francis Crick talks are available in podcast form. If anybody's interested, there's only 12 or 13 episodes so far, and they're available in this podcast series: A Question of Science. I downloaded the first few and will check them out shortly.

funny.

but i always like to remind people that the AI "singularity" isn't actually a singularity it's just a stolen physics word used to trick people into thinking that there's some magic moment coming when AI becomes actually good.

Not necessarily. In the current context, sure. But AGI is probably a thing that will happen at some point in the future and will likely hit a "singularity" inflection point where it's learning ability goes exponential.

What's going on right now though isn't that, isn't close to it, and imo isn't actually on the path to it (if anything it hinders or delays the development of real AGI). Real AGI won't need to steal anything.

A singularity is a physics term.

Has nothing actually to do with AI.

It's just a stolen term used for the hopeful scenario that suddenly AI becomes magically conscious/alive/superaccelerated somehow.

Even if that magically happens, it still wouldn't actually be a "singularity". Using the term actually is sort of just assuming the conclusion.
